VORTEC Crate 350 made to look old PICS WANTED

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31aBoy, Mar 5, 2008.

  1. I picked up a set, hopefully will work on having my engine look a little more vintage at some point.

Use the new intake meant for the motor and then get one of those large Olds/Caddy air cleaners. Most people will not know the difference or care to call you out on it. As far as the covers the ones shown on the first page look good.

Stude motor in the school bus, turned out to be an International motor...

They have some neat scripted valve covers though if any body wants them.

  8. Not a perfect Rochester clone. But I'd have that over an original in a car I drove a lot.

i dont have a pic, but here's my motor setup. 425HP vortec SBC. Barry Grant six-shooter setup. vertex HEI magneto look distributor. Speedways ram horn headers. I haven't bought valve covers yet. So, is it confirmed that tall Stude covers work?

I plan to do the same type conversion to my engine. I have a 1989 305 SBC with the same heads. Is it posible to buy an older intake since they are easy to find cheep and use it? I have heard you have to drill the holes at some angle. I have an older set of head old 305 heads I could rebuild if need be.

  11. 396skip, nice pics, that's what I'd hope to do to my SBC crate engine in my Merc.

  12. So I got a set of those Chevrolet valve covers, would they look old style if they were unpolished or painted? Were 50's Corvette valve covers painted?

As one of the guys mentioned we do offer a 3 carb set up for the Vortec motor and it comes in 2 versions. One has the billet oval air cleaner and is more modern looking but we also offer it in our Old School look with individual air cleaners and the red fuel lines. I dont have a pic on this computer but here is a link to the standard headed version. Vortec package is the same except it has the correct intake for the head.

I have a fastburn 385 , and the heads are drilled and tapped to accept either bolt pattern valve covers . They came like that from GM.

Can you tell me about that alternator bracket? (The lower one). I want that for my motor. Is it an older, stock piece or something aftermarket??

  18. Yeah, they are the cheap china ****, made by "RDC" or something like that. They make those in two versions, standard (the ones you linked to) and the tall ones. I have the tall ones on my motor. I got the tall versions to clear aluminum roller rocker arms (I still had to grind a bit on the inside to clear the rocker arms). BTW- I got mine at a swap meet from one of those guys selling trailer fulls of that stuff- I think I paid $120 for the pair of valve covers and the air cleaners.

I painted between the ribs black to match the engine block and used acorn nuts to mount them to the engine. They look as about retro as you can get without spending the big bucks on the Chevrolet script covers.

That looks very clean, you did a great job on the painting. Do they leak at all? What makes them "****"? I want a set of these but don't to buy junk that I'll just have to replace in a year...

    Thanks!

ttt...I have a 350 5.7L Vortec engine that I would like to make it old school with the old finned valve covers. Is the valve cover adapter on Jegs any good?

I've got an Edelbrock intake for Vortec engines, standard Edelbrock carb.

This will be going in a '47 Chevy Fleetline.
