That's the question. My '56 Plymouth wagon is coming home from the paint and body soon, and it'll be time to look for wheels and tires for it. I've thought about plain 15" steel wheels, with blackwalls and Moon wheel discs, for that Bonneville Speed Week look. And, I've considered 15" chrome steelies with NO caps, but with chrome lug nuts, cone centers, and 2-1/2" wide whites. The car is dark green with a white top, and will be lowered 2" front and back. The avatar pic shows it currently at 3" lowered in the back, which is too much for this car, IMO. Ideas?
In my opinion, steel wheels allow you more options. You can use moon discs, change to baby moons and trim rings, open wheel w/ trim rings, flipper wheel covers, spider caps, etc, etc.
Im voting steel wheels. I like Moon discs on cars that look like they should be on the salt. I think they look cheap and out of place on everthing else.
Yep, All of the above. Driill whatever steel wheel that you decide on for the full moons and switch 'em up... Smokey
I'm leaning towards the Moons for several reasons - one, they are cheap when compared to any aftermarket wheel; two, they are cool-looking; and three, I can always switch to a cop cap/baby moon cap with trim rings for a different look. Thanks for the opinions, guys!
There was a car on the cover of Goodguys mag awhile back that had chrome plated (or highly polished) moon covers on it. Looked killer... I say have the moon's polished and run them.

Moon disc belong on Bonneville type cars. Not old wagons, they towed the cars to the lakes in style. My vote is chrome reverse and a narrow whitewall.
IMHO you have to be IN DEEP LOVE with chrome smoothies to justify the financial outlay and your stuck with one look, albeit a great one. If (like me ) you flip, flop and change your frickin' mind every five minutes, then you have way more choices over the long term with steelies. Man, I'd have a different hub cap for each day of the week if my wife would let me. Paul.
Have you thought about the moons held on with the duez ****ons? To me they have a more permanent serious look . Rather than something just added to a wagon to make it look different.
Tough call as I like the moons too. I also think they have to be on the "right" car to look good. I would go with the steelies myself.
I like 'em both but if it's one or the other I vote steelies with a few different sets of caps for when you get tired of one look. As far as Moons only belonging on Bonnevile "proper" cars, I don't buy it. There were just as many drag cars and street cars running them in the car mags from the mid to late 50's as Bonneville cars, maybe more. I do agree they don't look good on just any old car and absolutely look like **** cheese on some but I think they'd look great on your car. I've got 'em on my Stude but there's a set of baby moons and trim rings in the garage for when I need a change and I've always got my eyes open for a good deal on other caps. During my muscle car days I had 2 different sets of caps and 3 different styles of trim rings for my rallye wheels so I could run several differnet combos. It might not seem like that would make much difference in the appearance of the car but you'd be surprised. PS: The Moon discs HAVE to be the screw ons though. Snap ons kill the look for me.
I've got a set of '56 Hudson 15" full wheel covers that are going on it! Plus, I have three complete sets, so I've got an extra or two, in case I lose one! I stuck these on the car, and boy, I really like them! They have a (sort-of) sombrero look to them, as well!
