OK, I'm sure there are a few guys on here with the means and will to keep a car until they die. Congrats.

To the rest of us that know in our heart of hearts we *will* end up selling or trading this pile one of these days, how much does that affect how you build it?!?

For me, it tempers my desire to pour money into my '51, because I know I don't want to keep it forever, my heart lies elsewhere.

I'm gonna paint it the color I like because fuckit, that's what I like, but I may not do the faux snakeskin interior and go with something more common.

I may also keep the grille, headlights, and taillights stock in order to save money/time/and some re-saleability. I ain't done yet though, so we'll see.

So how does resale factor into how you build your ride?

  2. current rides?

Not a bit...the ones I have both have sentimental value that I wouldn't dare to inflict on a buyer...

However, when I go into a car knowing it's going to be a flip, it's a balance of quality, personal preference, and general interest that drives what I do...

  3. Not at all,,I build the car for me,,if and when I sell it all I can say is I enjoyed it.

BTW,, I just sold my roadster that I had planed to keep, HRP

My coupe is the only car I have ever wanted to keep so I spent way to much on the motor.
As far as other builds go I just do what I want I usually break ever or make a little money but I am having fun and thats what its about for me.My last 2 cents

i am with the "none at all" crowd - I build for ME. If the next guy likes what he sees all the better. Of course I have not sold any of my rods or custome in a VERY long time - I built them for ME.

None, I build a car for ME no one else. I sold my 48 pickup a year ago and I had drove it for 19 years. How do you build reale into something you keep so long. My 33 was my dad's old hotrod so it will go to my kid. I am currently building a 31 model a sedan for a family ride and I am putting it together how I want it..................

Zero......I build & own to please myself only . If I end up with what I want , how can you put a $$ value on that ?. I think there is a book about drag racing called "They did it for Love" . Kind of what I do.........Z.D.

I always keep in mind selling it when I build a car, normally I don't drive the same car for more then a year or too. Can't afford to keep them all and can't not be building something. That said, it has entered my mind lately to start thinking of what car I'd build as a "keeper". Might be an age thing but not sure how many more years I'm going to want to or even can build a new one.

  12. Unless I'm building precisely to sell, which is rare, I build it the way I want it. Period!

Zero ...If I want to keep them I want them nice, same if I sell them ....I would hope other people would do the same

  14. Not the least bit.No one would buy something I built because no one likes my tastes.I usually never sell anything anyway.

Absolutely ZERO percent unless I'm just restoring a mach 1 or something to sell, then it's 100% . I plan on NEVER selling my car, so it doesnt matter to me one bit on that end. Determning an accurate resale value on a custom or hotrod before you actually sell it, much less before you build it, is nearly impossible anyway.

If you build it with resale in mind it's a business. If you build it the way you like it, it's a hobby. Screw the other guy.....

When I build a car it is usually to keep. But the build is completed like I would be building it for a customer. So the quality that I put in them hopefully will reflect on me if I ever do sell it. In dollars for me, and satisfaction to a future owner. I figure if I build a good driver and then drive the shit out of it before I sell it. Then my labor is also driven out of it. So all I have to recover is the actual dollars. On all the cars I've built and sold. This process hasn't let me down yet....ghost

It is very much on my mind, after not being able to sell it as a gasser/ early racer. maybe because it is a tri 5 chevy and most owners are very anal about any mods to them. I now over think what I will do to it. It seems the folks that like how it is can not afford it, those that dont wont pay for it. so its is going more main stream to open up the potential buyer market

ive never taken that into account..i build out of lust...
and if i did take into account the money spent and what the car ends up being really worth I'd be fucked..truth of the matter is most cars built and re-sold never recouperate the total cost of the build..Labor, hunting time, time spent working on it..parts, etc..
I guess what im saying is if it isnt what you do for work..than its a labor of love and therefore priceless to you.

and because of guys like you..my build was cheaper than i figured...thanks for the backing plates

I don't plan to sell the car. That being said I want to enjoy the car that I have put all that effort and money into. I think by building the car a car you like you end up with a better car.

This is a hobby for me, so for my first build i'd have to say none!

This is a piece of art i'm creating more than a traditional hotrod. It will be my vision, idea, style and flavor with a touch of desirable vintage parts and accessories:) the dollar amount won't be a factor because then it won't turn out the way i really would want it to be, it may take a bit longer, but i'm in no hurry at the moment.
Anything i've purchased over the years mainly due to investment value has backfired on me at times, so i collect things now because they have bit of a special meaning to me than just a dollar value on them to turn a profit, takes the fun out of this cool hobby.

    Grace and peace†

everyone will say it doesnt... but if we are all honest with ourselves i think we can admit that it does atleast a little bit...

i mean we all think of this when we are building, unless im the odd man out...

there is always a chance we could have to sell in the future, and im not rich enough to ok taking a loss unless i have to, so i plan accordingly with what parts i pick etc..

the current car i am working on is designed to be something i hand down to my kid (havent even started trying to have one yet with the wife),. and even with this serious plan to the future, my wife and I always plan out mods before we do em based upon resale value just in case.. if shit went down hill and we needed to sell to keep the house or something, i wanna make sure im getting the most i can

Haha, lol. Thats pretty much how it goes when you're in it for the love of the car and the enjoyment.

I always think about resale when building. That is how I fund my next build. Hopefully I've made enough to build a better ride, buy some new tools, and some much wanted parts....
