This weekend I was looking for a bench seat for my '65 c10. I found this junk yard full, I Mean FULL of old cars a parts. Well a side from me finding a upholstery guy in the same yard, I stumbled upon a complete hemi. Carb to ******. I asked the guy what it came out of and he said it came out of a mid 50's Chrysler New Yorker. What displacement would this be. The owner said it is one of the small ones. He wants 600 for it so I am seriously thinking about it.

    If I'm not mistaken the Chrysler hemi up till 54 was a 331ci, 55-58 was a 354ci and 58 was a 392ci.

Buy It! Either before during or after (the purchase and the move), you will need to find the engine ID so we can help you figure it out. The ID is stamped in the machined surface ahead of the valley cover, behind the water pump.

Until then, read everything in this link:

  6. $600 is a good buy is it locked up??...it should be a 331, 354...but as 73RR said we need the number to be sure.

It shouldn't be locked up but will most definatley need a rebuild. He was going to use it in a project so it should be in pretty good condition. I just walked by it, and it has been eating a hole in my brain ever since. Thanks for all the info guys. I will get the number and report back. Thanks for the link 73RR. A small sick little part of me wants to rebuild it and put it in my 65 truck, but another part of me can't bear to do it.

  8. Numbers on these are easy, they have the year in the first part and that's how you tell displacement, 55-back is 331, 56 is 354,57-8 is 392 -

Thats ***uming it's a Chrysler,it maybe a dodge or desoto too. A pic maybe nice so we can tell if you are wasting your money at $600..or if you like, I can pop over and look for myself and let you know if it is OK. ;)

If it is a short tail hemi, then it is 54-58. It could be 331,354, and if a 57 year engine then it will be a 392. If engine is solid then you are getting a deal for 600. The short tails are easier to adapt to other transmissions, extended bells (51-53) are more difficult.

Not quite correct. Chrysler 331 was through 1955, 354 was a one-year-only in the cars in 1956. 1957 and 58 were the 392's. Truck, Industrial, and Marine 354's persisted until the late 50's

I showed this to my wife. Now she appreciates my 315 hemi. We both laughed so hard.

  18. Hello my name is Steve and I am also addicted to Hemis. To be exact "Baby" hemis. I love them so much, money seems to be no object till this point. I'm at the point where I cannot afford my addiction and am crashing to the rock bottom. I'm going to resort to pimping myself but if that happens I may only be able to rebuild a Briggs and Stratton engine. I need more funds!!!!!!!!!!! Man they are expensive.
Is there any help out there?

...and what, exactly, makes you so special that you find a 'cure'...?:D

...and 'only six' ? You are waaaaayyyyy behind. hahahaha

Actually, do we want or need a cure? My wife may not understand the addiction but she prefers this to alot of other money pits.:)

at best, he was partially correct, 354's were available in 57 and 58 dodge trucks. i know, the original poster said his came out of a car, but it's been many years and many a truck and industrial engines have been transplanted into cars when the original hemi bit the dust.

You're not cured. It's a terminal disease!! It only comes in varrying degrees of addiction. Apparently you're only at level "six". :D

...so my the****** says, anyway. ;):D

I'm at a strange level. I have a few good incomplete motors and a couple cracked blocks. Where does that put me? I feel so incomplete...

I was generalizing it since he said mid-fifties which could be anything from 54 -57 in my book. Yes 331 Hemi 51-55, poly =56, 354 Hemi 56 only, poly 57 (58?), 392 57 and 58 and lastly the irrepressable 301 poly, the weirdo of the bunch 55 only.
