I was in the shed spinning wrenches on the AV8 coupe when my two and a half year old, Knuckles, started asking me all sorts of questions. What's that daddy? What's this daddy? He left and went back inside the house with his mum. Later on I went inside to get a drink, when I saw the little guy working on his toy car. I took a snap with the camera on my phone. I was so ****en proud I coulda burst! Has this happened to you? *****
Last year, my son bought a '66 Mustang. It needs a little work, so he has asked me to help. This week he picked up an ****** for $300 and will flip it for some extra dough. I'm still grinning.
My 9 year old will here me talking on the phone to one of my car buddies about a car show and soon as I get of the phone he all over me wanting to know when WE are going. He loves cars!! My youngest (4) hasn't caught the bug yet but I have a feeling he will soon.
dude that is awesome....my son is 6 and my daughter is 2 and she is the one that picks up the wrenches in the garage first! gotta love the kiddos!
Hahaha....thats is krazy man !! Just make sure hes uses good tools, always cleans em afterwards and knows how to road test em by laying two black lines the length of your street..... Won't be long before hes askin' for the keys to the *****. Rat
Yours is only the second kid I ever heard named 'Knuckles', and that one was for a different reason. That's a great name.
My oldest grandson is car, bike & train crazy! He was into bikes, till he discovered trains and now its cars. He loves "our" hot rod and semi........ He likes hitting the car shows with "Papa", but I think he's more interesred in the girls. Oh, b.t.w., he turned 5 in January! How cool is that?
yeah my kids are car nuts, to the point were it sometimes gets annoying. but this was interesting, there minds are like sponges, if you can get there attention you can pack alot into there heads real quick, try this, back when my son (who has recently turned 7) was 4 he spotted me playing this to my older son anyway my older son (who was 6)was asking what the names of the parts were but my younger son was taking them in, i then restarted the video to quiz my older son but my younger son remembered the names of most parts. it then turned into a game they wanted to play every afternoon, too see who could correctly name the part first, my youngest son become quick at it. my youngest son, now 7 is a lego nut, he has been playing with technics lego since he was 4 and lego city since he was 3 and duplo since he was 0, he spends most of his time playing with lego or jumping on the lounge. when i work on the car he starts building lego cars, sometimes with working steering, gears and electric motors, he ads details too like disc brakes and engines and tries to use all the right coloured peices too.
Great thing about have son's, you all ways have some one to blame when you can't find a wrench or a screw driver, it still happens today when I can't find some thing I blame him and he moved out 20 years ago.
M y 4 1/2 year old has a 50 chevy p/u, and 3 motorcycles. He changes his mind about once a week as to what color his truck should be. He even likes to block sand.......
its way more fun to include the kids. my 7 year old son informed me that i was giving him the old 37 dodge truck i have out back so we can work on it after me and my daughter are done with her 47 plymouth. teaching my daughter how to weld right now and shes 14. Shes a little iffy about most things but once she starts and does it for a while she loves it. the & year old will turn wrenches and is an awesome helper and he is dying to learn how to cut, weld and grind. they are caught up in the sickness. no hope for them now. ***** you might need to look into picking up an old peddle car or something to restore with the little person. i have seen some pretty bad*** ones. and i guess in this case it could be considered a gateway drug. gettim' hooked young.
It's cool that the kids come by it naturally. Believe it or not, we (meaning I) haven't pushed cars on either one of my kids, but they dig them anyway. My oldest son (now almost 8!) used to sit on my lap and beg to watch the Jimmy White video from deadendcruisers.com. We'd run through it 10 or 12 times, bangin powershifts... it was fun. My proudest moment with him though was when I was looking at FED's on the net one day. He was playing with his younger brother, walked by, and very casually said "Wow, nice digger, Dad!" then kept going. His brother, now, is a different story. His goal in life (at 4) is to be "a Duke Boy". He want's a race car. We bought him a Power Wheels Mustang for his birthday last year, and I made the mistake of pulling the Speed Screw out of it... he's burned through 2 sets of tires already! Last summer, we had some friends over, and they have daughters that are a year younger, and a year older than Riley (the 4 year old). Well, Riley (one of the girls) asks my Riley for a ride in the 'Stang, so he helps her get in the p***enger seat, then goes around to his side, jumps in Bo Duke style, and turns to me and her dad, gives us "the nod", puts his arm around her and gooses the pedal. That power wheel slid sideways, she's screaming (and laughing at the same time) and he's just Joe Cool... it was a riot. Kids...
back when i was cute and little, i usta tear stuff apart. Took apart a briggs n stratton when i was 5, and even got it back together and running.
this is my son Atcher helping me put in a motor. This kid wont stop no matter what he has to be using a tool in the garage with me.he is gonna be 3 next month!
It's a nice positive post. Thanks for all the replies, seems that some of us are real lucky to have kids that show a genuine interest in the 'madness'. You either get it or ya don't, and when you finally see that the kid gets it, it's one of those definative moments in your life. I've got two boys, young Knuckles and little Happy. Happy's only 13 months, but he's already learnt to say ,broom broom, when he sees the coupe. Can't really ask for more. My eyes are welling with tears, I feel a little emotional right now....ha ha ha. Enjoy. MADNESS = Everything to do with Traditional Rods & Customs, not just a hobby, it's a way of life, hence, the Madness! *****
Yeah, it's all good until you come one day, open the garage door, and see your coupe with a new chop! My 13yo is building his own '30 A coupe with a Desoto hemi. It's hard to be any more proud than I am of him. My 8yo is patiently waiting for us to start his project. I'm trying to figure out how to include the younger one in the A coupe build. Steven
Guys. This is nothing new to me. This kid is awsome. I was with ABONED doing a couple things with the coupe and young Knuckles comes up with a screw driver stickin it in to all the bolts and that and saying.... Were fixing the car daddy. I will never forget that. Good stuff. Hope to catch up soon. He'll probably start telling me next about that Hemi his dad's planning to throw in the coupe. SHSHSHSH. HEHEH. HC.
My 10 year old grandson lives for car show and cruise in season. He keeps referring to Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup as "my truck." It will be one of these days. Most kids are naturally curious about everything and we have the opportunity to strengthen a relationship that will last longer than the cars.
