my 58 decided to commit suicide, i was standing in front of the truck with it running putting water in the radiator, about to go for a spin. my transmission decided it wanted to drop into reverse by itself, goddamn lokar shifter. i guess it wasnt all the way up and locked out. well the truck took off and, luckily the wheel was turned it backed up right into my house. i tried to run around and jump in it., the door was open, but iwasnt quick enough smashed the right side bed corner, pushed the bed into the cab, and bent up the back of the cab. cracked the brick on my house, shit im so pissed. o well looks like i got some work to do.
no, no one was hurt. my 3 year old son was home too, im just glad he was inside at the time. it could of been alot worse. when i realized i wasnt gonna be able to save it, i just stood there and watched, then everything went into slow motion, it was crazy,, and then BAMM! it hit the brick wall
thanks man., yeah pretty much just got it finished, i still needed to do a few little things. i had been drving the shit out of it the last few weeks. now this!.
bummer man..guess your detent wasnt adjusted right? they can be a bit fussy but when they are done right and locked up tight they do work. is yours the trans mount style or floor mount style? either way you should be able to get it adjusted correctly to lock in park positively. so far 3 years on mine on a TH350 in my 53 chevy no issues at all
i know your pain. back in around 96 i had a 64 malibu...real nice granny car... i was working under hood and the car dropped into gear and plowed into the back of my neighbors pick up with heavy iron work bumper on it... luckily it was just a few feet... coulda been much worse. smashed my cherry grille and wiped out a fender...
its a floor mount, it never really felt right to me., i always meant to get under there and make sure it was ok, i guess i shouldnt have waited, i never had any other problems with it before.
I had a non-HAMB Mustang that would shake itself out of Park and into Reverse. That happened twice, fortunately I was able to get it stopped without incident. Then I got the bright idea to leave it in Neutral while it was running. All was well for a while, until the time I was washing it at a coin wash, and the damned thing shook itself into Drive. It lurched out of the stall with me trying to hold on and open the door, feet dragging across the sudsy water. It came up to a chain-link fence and idled right up the thing, half knocked it over and got the front wheels about two feet off the ground. Fortunately it only ended up with a minor scratch. I threw that shifter away and got a better one, no need for a safety liability like that. I am sorry about your truck and house dude. Glad you and your kiddo weren't hurt!
I taught my daughter to always use her e-brake on an automatic. My friend had a '70's Ford wagon that tried to chase its tail once, that stuff looks funny unless you're there, then it isn't quite so hilarious...thank goodness no one was hurt!
I had a 70 Chevelle winter beater that tried to kill me and leave in similar fashion. I was standing outside the car scraping the wind shield while the car was warming up. It slipped into reverse while on high idle and started across the mall parking lot. I ran after it, grabbed the door (it was open) and tried to fling myself in. I hit my head on the windshield pillar. Next thing i know i'm sitting in the car, it's in park and running and i have blood running down my face. I don't remember stopping it or putting it in park. I stumbled into the pool hall i had just left and everyone looked at me said almost simaltaneously "Who did that to you?!! We'll kick their ass!!" LOL. After explaining while getting attention to my head they all LOL'd. Very sorry about your truck though.
Dude!!! Sorry to hear about the truck! Im having the same damn problem with my merc right now. She is a colum shift and I need to get one of my buddies to check it out with me tonight! Sloppy - doesnt line up with the marks, you think its in park after you kill her and she starts rolling away. Glad to hear your ok!!
Sorry to hear about your truck . Nice looking truck too ! At least no one got hurt and the truck can be fixed .
had an elder lady die right in front of me many years ago after her car dropped in reverse and she tried to chase it... She was at the mail box and for some reason she grabbed the passenger side door and the car backed into a steep ditch pinning her under the passenger side rocker panel.. I was helpless . I stopped a guy going buy and told him to get the cops in town but he drove off and never did a thing. I finally opened the door and shut the car off and took her keys opened her house and called 911.. The cops came and we tried to jack the car up (i didnt dare try anything till they got there) and she passed away while we were trying to lift the car. The wierd part was she spoke to us the whole time then nothing.. Never chase a moving vehicle... its not worth your life its just a car or truck.. Dave
I have a 1960 f-100 with a 292 and a ford-o-matic do the same thing to me. Door caught the garage door track and shoved the door into the front fender. I took the front end apart to fix the fender and decided to restore the truck. I could only imagine seeing that happen after all your hard work. Sorry about your luck. -The Catholic
I have done the same with a column shifter, just with less destruction of house or vehicle. Just got lucky, never figured out what happened. Sorry you weren't as lucky. That just stinks. Don't lifes lessons suck. Joe
Glad to hear nobody got hurt man...throw that shifter far, far away....I built my model A coupe with all old parts to be a traditional hot rod with a couple of exceptions, one being the shifter....Hurst Quarterstick...it locks into position and it's not coming out unless you pull on the secondary handle... sorry about your truck man...thing looked really sweet...
I bought an O/T Mustang for parts that slipped into reverse while running in a shop and backed out the door, did a couple of laps around the parking lot hit a pole which knocked it into forward, went back in the door and wiped out his snap on tool box, Fords trannys of that vintage are noted for slipping into gear unexpectedly, back in the 760s they did a recall on it, they would put a sticker on your dash telling you to apply the park brake. Sorry to hear about your troubles, glad It only hit your house.
Sorry to hear that ,I had a not so similar thing happen in my garage with my non Hamb old 911 rolling backward down off my lift with the driver door open, me half in it jumping on the clutch instead of the brake .Luckily minor damage to both car and Garage door molding.
i have this fear everytime i leave my car and its running. at least it was all your stuff. woulda sucked to tell a neighbor you smashed their house.
Had basically the same thing happen to my truck . It rolled backward into the garage and , of course , I had the passenger door open , it caught on the garage door frame and it pushed it around and bent the door on the fender ! It goes without saying how sick I felt at the moment ( still do ) ! It also broke the door travel limiter ! I guess I should just be grateful it didn't run over me or .... something !
