greetings, a friend hooked me up with a nice pair of slicks.. i wont be needing them for awhile and was wondering if there is a proper way to preserve them. many thanks.
How old are they now? Are you concerned with looks or traction? Store them in a relatively cool place (not in the attic). Wrap them in "Saran" type plastic wrap. Each rubber tire has moisture content when it comes out of the mold. They all will breath and continue to dry out. When you get ready to use them buy some Hot Lap compound available at circle track suppliers. VHT is another compound used to soften drag slicks.
couple sites said this Remove the tires from the vehicle. 2. Remove the air from the tires and store them on their side in a cool/dark/dry environment. 3. Place tires in a black plastic bag when stored during the "off-season". 4. Make sure the temperature range in the storage location is between 40-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
I remember being told to store in cool, dry place, as others mentioned, but also to lay them on the side with a piece of plywood between the ground and tire, and between the tires. Hope this helps.
Im not sure about slicks for sure, but heres how I store wider tires. I keep them in the basement of my house, its cool down there and doesnt get real cold in the winter time, then I take them off the rims and I put a inner tube in them and air it up. Then stack them in a corner on a pallet or something that keeps them off the ground. The reason for the tubes is that when i go to mount tires on wide rims, after they have been stored, the inside sticks close together and its hard to get them to pop on a bead. So even with new tires I let them sit for a day or two with a tube in them to spread the sidewalls apart.
I buy a small bottle of glycerine (two bucks at your local drug store), pour some on a rag and rub it into the sidewalls until the shine goes away. It seems to help preserve the rubber. The 40 year old M & H Racemasters on the dragster were still in good shape after all those years.
RandMan - the slicks are hoosiers and only have 3 passes on them. ill be using them for racing in the somewhat near future. excellant, thanks for the info fellers!

I keep mine on their sides so that they won't develop flat spots. Keep them out of the sun, in the coolest place possible. Dave http://www.roadsters.com/
