I have a '55 dodge with power brakes and cannot find a rebuild kit or replacement master cylinder anywhere. I did some research and found several people putting later model dual chambers from 68-73 model cars on. They are supposed to be bolt on, well I got a master cylinder from a '68 charger and 2 of the four bolts line up. I cannot find a rebuild kit that looks like it has the right parts either, even the ones listed for power brakes doesn't look right. only number on it are E38862 and a "padlock looking" symbol and 70 I can't use the later dual chambers because of the bolt pattern for one, and also they stick out so far the hit the back of the power steering pump on the generator. these are the best pics I can get with my phone camera.. anyone recognize this ? the master cylinder is actualy not that bad, but I need the one rubber part out of the whole thing, and can't find it.
I have a 55 desoto (single year brake parts!?!), I found several nos master cylinders and rebuild kits. None of them worked, and the booster was shot too (I can box it all up and send it to you if you want to try yourself). I got a new setup from AAJ brakes and now have a gm type booster/master. I also put discs on, since it is a 4000 lb monster. I want the wife to be safe while driving amongst traffic. You can't see them anyway. But basically, drill a couple new holes and run a new booster with a dual chamber drum/drum master that fits it, and you can never worry about it again.
I might be interested in your spares. I'll PM you Do you have P/S on your car? The way mine is, there's not much room for a long booster/master cyl combo before it hits the back of the P/S pump. so I'm not sure if the AAJ kit will work for me. Here's a picture of a near identical set-up to mine, minus the hemi heads. http://www.remarkablecars.com/ppads...ge=07651-1955-chrysler-new-yorker-wagon-5.jpg funny thing is... this pic makes it look like there is plenty of room, but on my poly (which may have the gen set back further) I couldn't even slip a later model dual chamber resevoir past the P/S pump
Welcome to 1955 Mopars Keysey Hayes braking. My Chrysler shares the same hardware. White Post restoration can resurrect your master cylinder with a lifetime warranty if you want to keep the original setup. It's pricey but the only source that I've found in 20 plus years of ownership.
What about making a plate with the 4 holes in it to bolt to the booster, and two bolts or studs sticking out, and adapting an early '60s' Ford single reservoir master cylinder to it. Might save a little room.
The master cylinder I used was for a drum/drum '70 Dart. My car is a '57, not sure if it mounts differently than your '55.
apparently my car is one year only KH power brake set-up... seems like I always get this crap, my' 56 cadillac was also KH
I think I'll try adapting the chevy 8" dual diaphragm booster and dual chamber master cyl, as long as it fits behind the p/s pump
That looks just like my desoto (wrong hemi), but the dodge is smaller, might be the difference. I have plenty of room in there.the new booster is actually just a hair smaller, I will measure it and post back.
On mine I used a 78 camaro mastercylinder. To mount it I just took out the old mounting studs, welded up the holes and made new ones. Works great.
Ok another question for you guys. After pulling the remains of the shoes off, I find a set of relined shoes locally. Problem is, Which one is the front shoe? One shoe has about 25% less material on it, on purpose it looks.
Revhead...........It used to be"black on the back, like on the bus", no offense intended to anyone, that's the way I learned!.......They were normally different colors. I THINK.....(scary), that the longer shoe is to the rear, but check around.
I have a foot between the master and the pump, and pretty sure the larger shoe goes towards the front.
