  1. I think I already know the answer to this question, but I will throw it out there just the same. I was installing a dipstick in my trans this morning and needed a little more room so I pulled the dizzy. Anyway there was a small leaf on the top of my cowl and you'll never guess where it fell. Yep, right down the holle all the way to the top of the oil pump:eek:. What's the best way to acess this? I'm guessing drop the oil pan and pull the oil pump? This really ****s!!! At least we're finaaly having some nice weather. Todd

    Can you see it?

I know,, stupid question..(im allowed one a day)

if not..take the pan off and see if you can get your fingers up there to snag it..sure it isnt laying on the cam gear for the Dist.?

or you could take the pan down if its not too much trouble and pour a quart of oil down the Dist. hole and see if it flushes it out..
good luck let us know how it goes

i hate it when **** like this happens

Wow! What are the odds of this happening? I don't see anyway around dropping the pan to get it out though. Damn the luck!

throw some miracle gro down the hole.when that leaf starts sprouting out the dizzy hole, grab it and pull it out by the roots.....
seriously, can you see it down the hole at all?mechanical fingers might work if ya can see it. if not poor a few quarts of cheap oil down the hole and it may flush it out the drain plug.

Coupla weeks ago, tried to shorten a dip stick, broke off, hadda pull the pan. Oh well. Sixty degrees today. Hey try a small tube taped to a vacuum hose, may hold it enough to pull it out.

  6. Shop vac, & inspection mirror.
couple smaller diameter hoses to desired/required diameter
stick it in the hole & remove the object.

    another good idea!

i got some **** out of my engine once , by taping a bic pen (with the guts taken out) to the end of my shop vac hose,,****ed it right out!

  8. the odds of that happening are pretty damn good. hahaha
Leave an open hole on a motor and something will fall in that mf-er every damn time.

You could use one of those long thin 3-4 prong grabbers...

  11. if you can grab it with one of those mechanical finger things , that would be great. if not , i say the hell with it..that's what screens in the oil pickup and oil filters are for

Idle it for 5 minutes a couple times with an eye on the pressure gauge. Rev it real hard a couple times. Then forget it ever happened and move on.

If it went down that hole, it can't cover the whole pickup.

After it gets hot & soaked a few times, it'll start to p***. Then the oil pump gears will gnash those little bits coming thru the screen. Anything that gets past the filter will be small enough to recirculate.

Take apart enough good running engines and you'll find all kinds of ***orted stuff inside em. I'm not taking a pan off an installed engine for one little leaf.

Paper covers rock, but scissors cut paper. Good luck

take some good sticky tape (3-M two sided) wrap it around a piece of semi stiff tubing or wire (coat hanger) go fishing. just make sure you have the tape secured to the wire.

It's just a leaf, one small enough to fit in the distributor hole, I wouldn't worry too much. Hell, I wouldn't worry at all.

Yea that won't last very long with the heat, and its not abrasive. Just watch the oil pressure for a while. Hate pulling a pan when the engines in place. My 3 cents worth. Iceman

  16. what would one small leaf hurt? is this motor made of paper machet?

If it's a small block chevy it will never bother it a bit. Might actually be good for a couple HP!

This'd be my suggestion as well.

  19. Put a wad of wheel bearing grease on the end of a dowel rod. The leaf will stick to the grease and come right out. Seems anything else will make it crumble and your back to taking the pan off Good luck >>>>.

That leaf is probably good for a tenth in the quarter mile! ;-)

I would give it a quick go with one of the easy suggestion above and if no luck, I'd also run it a bit with a close eye on things and then change the oil and filter.

I would do my best to get it out. But I can be a little paranoid. The only thing I would be worried about is the oil pump screen being covered. My 2 cents

  24. I tried the shop vac thing. I ended pushing it out of the way now I cant see it. I guess I wll let it run and see what happens. I just don't want it to break down and block any oil p***ages. That would ****. Todd

a week ago i snaped a sparkplug off in my ranger with a 2.3, broke off flush with the head, so i used my shop vac with a short piece of garden hose on the end and proceded to smash up the ceramic and **** it out, in the end a short piece fell into the cylinder, so then i start trying to get what was left of the metal part of the plug out, i heated it up with the torch red hot a couple of times to shrink it and used an easyout, it took awhile and chewed up some metal and that fell into the cylinder, so my shop vac hose was to big to fit into the cylinder, then i remembered a thread on here about makeing your own soda blaster useing a blow nozzle and some clear plastic hose, so i made one up, used 3/8" tube for the air nozzle and then down to 5/16" to fit into the cylinder, on the exit i placed a plastic bottle cut off with some fine mesh to catch what i ****ed up just to make sure i was getting anything, worked like a charm, i ****ed what i think was everything out, stoped when i stoped getting anymore.

Well anything getting in an oil p***age first has to be small enough to go thru the pickup screen.

Then it has to be small enough to go between the pump gears.

Then it has to be part of the unlucky oil that goes thru the filter byp*** instead of getting filtered.

Then it has to get in a p***age and be able to resist 60 pounds of hydraulic force without breaking down.

Perhaps the solution lies in a few cold beers while the tense startup moments p***......

This is probably how I would handle the situation.... I look in the hole for a simple extraction, think about it for a min or two, then I would put it together and pretend it never happened...

    Leaf it in there...

Or take the pan off. It is highly doubtful you can get a leaf out that has been in oil without removing pan...

  30. I would use the shop vac with 5/8 heater hose or similar Clean the vac out first so you will know if you got it. The heavy bearing grease sounds pretty good
