I thought I had the leaking trans fixed. I was wrong. Fixed the leaks on the trans and thought that would do it. I was wrong. Replaced the old speedo cable with a new one, and was SURE that would fix it. I was wrong. I have a Royal Purple spot on my driveway the size of a coffee saucer. Looked at it, and the new cable is leaking through the crimp where the sleeve enters the metal end and plugs into the transmission. Anyone got a solution for this before I spackle it with gray RTV? -Brad
I guess I would take my speedo drive apart and look for a missing/worn seal or gasket. You should have no fluid in your speedo cable at all and I'm going to suggest that there is a bad seal in your speedo drive.
"Anyone know a fix before I take a hammer to it?" Hope you never have E.D. dude Darn near every speedo drive gear I've seen has a small o-ring or seal. You should be able to take the cable off and have no drips....
I'm using a T-5 and got the same problem. Is there suppose to be an O-ring besides the one where the piece that holds the gear and accepts the cable nut? I have replaced the hard gasket that the cable housing seats on and still got the drip.
Overfull trans? I had the same problem with a C4 in a hotrod, if left sitting for a week or more , it would leak out of the cable, my guess was there was a slow leak back from the converter, so it overfilled the box until you started the car again and pumped it up into the convereter again.
It's a MY6 833 New Process 4spd OD manual trans. Speedo gear drive in the tailshaft of the housing is same as a TH350/700r4. The whole drive housing has a rubber O-ring where it seats into the transmission tail shaft. It's not leaking there. The speedo cable screws to the drive gear's housing. It's not leaking there. Trans fluid is seeping into the cable, and it is leaking where the cable's sheath is crimped to the metal attachment. I don't see where there'd be any kind of a seal to keep fluid out of the cable--no o-ring, etc. The speedo drive gear is plastic, and the tang for the speedo cable goes right into it--I can't see how there would be any kind of a seal there. What am I missing? -Brad
Speedo gear drive in the tailshaft of the housing is same as a TH350/700r4. I am not familiar with your manual transmission but going by what you said about the tail housing, There is a small lip seal in the speedometer housing that seals the plastic driven gear. If you have a aluminum housing it is held in by a wire clip if it is a steel housing it is a steel outer seal that is driven in.
Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem with my c4 in my truck. It was leaking from where the black part of the speedo cable met the crimp for the part that slides into the tail shaft. I used rtv to stop the leak (which ended up working) but this last weekend while driving the truck to Santa Barbara there was trans fluid dripping off the bottom of my dash! When I pulled it apart I found that the trans fluid had worked it's way all the way up the speedo cable while on the long drive and started leaking all over the wires behind my dash, then down on my floor off the dash! I have no seal inside the speedo cable, but that's the way I got it new. Does anybody know why this would happen? It's driving me nuts!

the plastic gear in the trans rides on a bushing and should have a seal or oring around it. they are probly both worn out. you should be able to disconnect the cable without an leak. on my 350 trans. there is a small drive that fits into the tailshaft.I brought the peice to a trans shop and wanted a seal but got the hole drive when he showed me the bushing. also check the plastic gear for any kind of grove in it.
