Hi all, need a little help here,

The time has come to start driving some of my older cars for the first time this summer, so first I need to establish a collector car policy for them. However, I am having a hard time locating a classic car insurance company to insure some of my cars due to my age (23) as most set the age requirement at 25 or older with no exceptions.

I have a clean driving record, and multiple cars to include on the policy. I am able to provide every photo, appraisel or documentation needed, and I could pay the premium in full one check for a few years in advance if required. I have a seperate policy for my daily driver vehicles, I own real estate and have a clean credit record. I only plan to drive the cars to car shows, or cruises or repair/restoration shops and occassionally (perhaps once a month) to my work or out to dinner.

Sneed & Grundy were my first choices, but both have age requirements of 25.

Certainly there has to be someone else under 25 on here who has delt with this same situation? If so I would really appreciate hearing which company you chose.

    Thank you in advance!

Paul, unfortunately, you're probably out of luck. I've been looking for classic insurance for my cars since I was 17, with no luck. I turn 25 in August, and getting QQ plates and collector insurance will be like Christmas morning. The best you can do until you turn 25 is to get onboard with an insurance company that will recognize an agreed value for your vehicle. This will entail lots of pictures and an appraisal, but it will establish a real world price for your vehicle, often based on the car's resale value in it's current condition as a "blue book" value does not exist. This way, should you make a claim, there are no surprises as to what the insurance company thinks your car is worth. The down side to this approach is that you will have to pay full price for insurance, unlike collector car policies, which can provide full coverage for pennies on the dollar. The upside being that you won't have many of the restrictions collector policies impose such as milage limits, garage storage, and not being able to drive in inclement weather. I know it sucks, but you may have to tough it out until you turn 25

I'd check into broad form insurance, liability on any car you drive. It might be the only way intil you reach the age requirement. It's not that expensive...Good Luck

NO, no one under the age of 25 is allowed to drive a Grundy or Hagerty policy holders car, and be covered, period.

My nephew is 16 so I've looked into this and it's really, really clear in the policy. I've shown him the policy so it is also very clear to him that he is never to drive Big Olds, his Grandfathers classic cars or anyone else's classic car till he turns 25 period, no exceptions. He understands why and that when he turns 25 he will be able to borrow my car and his Grandfather's cars but till then he'll just have to suffer in the passenger seat.

If I remember correctly I had AAA on my classic cars from the age of 16 ('68 Camaro convertible) till I turned 25.

  8. Not all States offer broad form liability insurance. I know my greedy PITA State forbids it from being offered, in fact!

try American Hobbyist. I'm not sure what there age policy is, but they do work on an agreed value basis. reciepts, photo's and the likes are necessary, but it could be all for not if you aren't 25.
Check with them and best of luck...

Hagerty will sometimes consider drivers under 25. I got my Hagerty policy when I was 24.

Just get regular insurance and be VERY careful until you're 25. My brothers got his 57 desoto covered through AAA at a premium of $8000 or so. I'd ask AAA.

Picked up a brochure for Condon & Skelly at the atlantic city show. Didn't talk to any agents from the company but the website states you only need 5 years of driving experience but as luck has it I'm still too young only 20.......

Also sometimes 25 doesnt always mean 25. Just talked to an agent of J.C. Taylor at the Hamburg Swapmeet. Their insurance policy states you must be atleast 25 years or older. I explained my situation to the agent and he gave me a name and number to call of another agent of the company. He told me sometimes they will insure a driver under 25 but they first have to go through an interview process. Since I'm a college student and working on side I might have a good chance of getting approved. Now I just after to get around to calling.....

You would think the hobby would do something about most companies being 25 years or older. The expense of regular insurance on a classic vehicle might scare away people under 25 from getting into the hobby. And everyone says the future depends on the younger generation....

We often complain that few young people get into this hobby of ours. Considering the big issue with getting insurance I can understand why alot of "kids" will head over to tuners and such. One of these days the insurance companies will come up with a fair way to let younger folks enjoy old cars.

  15. Guilty until proven innocent. I had to wait to turn 25 to get classic car insurance.

I have several vehicles with Condon & Skelly, and I asked if anyne could drive my cars and they be covered to include my minor son who is 17, They said yes.

  17. You can get the car insured at that age, you just can't get a great policy, and you'll have to go to a generic consumer oriented insurance company. I had Geico with my various Pontiacs, but they won't insure I think 1950 and older. I have State Farm now and no problem going older - but I'm older now too. But I'd try them. About the only other option is to sell the car to a parent and have it insured on their policy.

  18. Unfortunately all the policy's I've seen you have to be at least 25 yrs old and or a 10 yr clean driving record, absolutely no violations, no exceptions.........FNG.......

I had state farm on my 52 chevy pickup when I was 16-19 when I took it off the road to rework it. No problems, granted it wasn't anything too special.

I have been screaming this for years..

it pisses me off that these insurance co's will not consider drivers under 25.. if your mature enough to own one of these cars.. you are mature enough to insure it..

the "nsra's endorsed insurance carrier will not insure a large percentage of under 30'ers.. yet the nsra sponsors an "29 below"

    always struck me as ironic..

I'm getting my car insured thru Grundy right now. They told me they wont insure a secondary driver under the age of 25 unless they have had a clean driving record for 3 years, then they would condider it. My son stuffed a brand new Pontiac G6 into a guardrail 2 yrs ago, so he's screwed.

Check out this FAQ page for Hagerty:
    http://www.hagerty.com/NewsManager/templates/template6.aspx?articleid=59&zoneid=21

"Q. How many years of driving experience is required of an insured?
    A.
We are happy to discuss coverage with all enthusiasts and able to consider drivers 18 years old and older. In some states, we cannot offer coverage to drivers with less than 5 years driving experience. Underwriting guidelines, including household driving records, will apply."

At times Grundy will consider youthful drivers with a clean MVR. Don't hesitate to call us 800-338-4005

I have Hagerty and I am 24 with two vehicles on the policy. me being under 25 was never an issue for them. Talk to a woman named Michelle thats who signed me up. There were no catches or special rules for me either.

Sounds like Hagerty might have changed their policy lately, BUT I do know what it says in my Grundy contract, read it with my own eyes. I've got a call in to Bill to see if I can get a revised policy.
