I'm getting bored of the look of my old truck. I've recently been looking through some door art here on the HAMB. With a little help from photoshop, I came up with this. I like it; what do you guys think? Anything I should change? This is my first try, so constructive criticism appreciated... By the way, when I actually do paint it, the building graphic will be far less detailed, more of a general outline with bold colors. Original truck: New door signage by photoshop: Closeup: Thanks! --Matt
You should do whatever you like. But if you want my opinion, I say the truck looks too shiny and "new" for that old fashioned door art, and 1964 doesn't seem all that old. The style of the door art looks like it was designed in the '30s or '40s or something, and that truck wasn't around back then in the '40s, so it looks a little contrived. Maybe if the door art looked like something that would have been done in 1964, it would fit the look of the truck better.
Its my Dad's factory. They manufacture composite cork for fine footwear. Its one of the last factories that still produces cork for shoes and stuff. Everything else has rubber insoles these days.
It looks OK, I could take it or leave it. But it is advertising for your Dad's place, if you work there you might be able to write off your vehicle expenses from your taxes..
One more little comment. It's tough to tell if it says Cork or Conk. At first I thought it said Conk. When I go back and forth between sign and no sign, I think the sign takes away too much attention from the rest of the truck. It's like all you can see is the sign. Without the sign, my first thought was, "hey, it's a nice blue ford truck". With the sign it's like, "What's a cork (or conk) technology?" and "I wonder how high do you have to pile the bed of a pickup with cork to make a half-ton payload?" I guess if you want your truck to be an advertisement for that cork factory, it might work, because your eyes sort of ignore the truck and go straight for the sign. Just some thoughts. It's your truck though, so you shouldn't really care what any of have to say, and have fun doing whatever you like.
looks like more people like it than not. only person that matters is you. if you like it, i say do it.
I think it's the factory just does not look right to busy for a rolling sign, And the lettering design does not match the truck.....too old style research sixties style....I like adds on truck doors but go through more ideas BUT HEY IT AINT MY TRUCK it after all is yours and you have the final say I do like it because it's your dads business that's cool.....
Get rid of the building { to busy-not cool} and look into font of the TRUCKs era ...{very fat / loose / race-y style lettering }. DO NOT mix commercial art / font styles {i.e. - est. 1964} letter it staight forward , period , proud & clear = COOL .
Back then, the state abbreviation would've been Mass. rather than MA, since those two-letter postal abbreviations came about in the mid-'70s. And, "Mass." just looks better! I like the door signage. It's advertising a REAL business, versus a made-up one just for looks.
Hmm, now that I look at it, the building is really cluttering. But like I said, I think it might work when all the tiny details are gone. Pretty much left with the shape of a factory... See, this is why I love the HAMB. I'm glad I asked. Changing M.A. to Mass now... By the way, after its painted, how do I make it look a bit weathered?
scuff it and do it vertical because it rains that way and it runs DOWN the item...... rub some all most off......... but you should do that on other parts of the truck also...........
Yeah honestly the paint is not in very good shape. The pictures I posted are of its best side. The front was in a collision (PO long time ago), so I have different colored panels out front. The passenger side fender got crunched pretty good, took off paint. Also, the roof and hood are very sun-beaten and faded. So I'm not really worried about messing up a decent paintjob or anything like that. Just want to try something new while I work on the body and someday fresh paint...
i like it as is! i could look at door lettering all day long, leave it as is that is excellent work there!!
I too was confused between cork and conk. The other thing is you mentioned this is the best side and the other side was in a collision. Does your dad really want a wrecked semi rough truck for his advertising? I always look at the image the person is trying to portray, and how well the vehicle is kept, and to me it relates directly to the type of business ethics the person has. I'm sure it's a stand up business since it has been going so long, and I'm also sure you're intent is good, but.....
I like original doors with original lettering. I bought a truck just for the doors 10 years ago. Finally got to use the doors!
