Would like to see some pics of driveshaft exhaust tubes. Or how you made some?

never heard of such a thing but if I were going to make exhaust from a driveshaft I'd cut both ends off cuz if you don't there will be too much backpressure.:D

I did this on my fenderless '36 pickup that I am just now getting to run. Don't know when Ford quit using these driveshafts, but they are cool. One pic is from assembling, other is current.

No actually he doesn't. Never heard of torque tube exhaust until I arrived at this board and saw some young studs were actually using heavy ass torque tubes for exhaust!

What was used very often on roadsters for exhaust up the side of the body, both sides if a V8, WAS driveshafts. Anyone familiar with early Fords knows that the flathead V8 Fords used a tapered tubular driveshaft INSIDE the torque tube from 1935-38. Beautifully tapered and capped at each end with a short steel splined stub shaft for use with 10-spline pinion gears.

  7. it is actually the DRIVESHAFT out of a 36 ford torque tube...not the tube itself..desirable because of its light weight and perfect amount of TAPER...very common practice on the real hot rods of the late 50s...We got Lakeheaders to build us a set from our driveshaft because i hate the look of every megaphone style lake pipes on todays builds...looks like a parking cone to me...you chop the spline ends off of each end and cut the driveshaft in half and there you go!...torque tube shaft style looks so much better

A lot of people didn't know there were Early Fords until 3 months ago, 3 years ago, and 3 days ago.

Yup he said so and out here we run the much lighter drive shaft tubes and anyone that hasn't pulled one of these driveshafts will think they are looking at the torque tubes made into exhaust

Yeah, I'd think torque tubes would be a bit HEAVY to make exhaust pipes out of! lol... Might as well use 4" sewer pipe.

These are made out of a driveshaft, but not a '36 ford one. I sliced a pie piece out of it and welded it up to get the cone...

Rod & Custom did a tech piece on this a couple of years ago or so. Very cool results in the photos above.

Holy shit!!! I really had no idea that it was the Drive shaft and not the torque tube. Always learning something new on the HAMB.

Here's a page out of the book "How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod" By Mike Bishop and Vern Tardel. Here they explain the use of '33-'34 torque tubes for exhaust. I have also uploaded a pic of a pair I happen to have in my garage to help illustrate the beautiful full length taper. It's 2.25" on the small end and 3.5" on the big end. Hopes this helps clear thing up a bit.

A friend of mine is using '57 Ford driveshafts for ihs lake headers, since they have a cool step design to them...

Mine are made outa 36 shafts. Used them on my 34 pickup alsobut made them come out at the back of the running board. These are easy to work with, just gring the welds off the ends so the plug will come out, measure the center and slash cut them. They also buff up pretty good

In the 60s we used those on the 6CYL cheves. you coud get some real noise out of the drieshafts running them straight through. Split your manifold and make it ring some srill sounds.

lets see YOU told US that what this guy was really looking for was a TORQUE TUBE when it was said we run drive shaft tubing here where in that statement was regional differences possibly taken into consideration by you ?As for arrogant traditional assholes I ain't the one telling people they can kiss my ass because my information is different than theirs!and as for "traditional "It's the most bullshit word tossed around on this board.because in almost every case there's an argument on whats "traditional" the truth of the matter is there's a regional issue at the core of it.

  27. Cool thing about 35-36 driveshafts is, you get two "lake pipes" out of one drive shaft, (not the torque tube btw.)

There was a post on this recently by yours truely. When I was a kid in Mich (in the old days) guys were using drive shafts for exhaust and they called them 'bellow tubes'.

These tubular shafts are found in 35-38 Fords as factory issue...but not all of them.
You'll also find them under various year vehicles which have had the rearends replaced at sometime in the life of the 35-40 car/35-41 pickup.

I guess I'm an idiot. Model A torque tubes. They're not that heavy.
