Hey guys, been watching in here for a while, but this is my first post. Tried to do a search for info on this car, but I know nothing about it other than it was one of Watsons first lace attempts. Can anybody please tell me anything more, i'm in love with this car. Thanks, Noel.
1964 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Doug Carney. I also have a picture of this car in an issue of Car Craft from 1965?? with the owner's name as Carl Sampier. There is another picture on Rik Hoving's Custom Car Photo Archive. http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/. That's all I can tell you about this car. Rikster would be the one to ask here on the HAMB.
Tom Davison took this photo of Doug Carney's Watson painted 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix. According to a Rod & Custom article about Larry Watson - written by Thom Taylor - the car was Larry's first ever Lace-paint job in 1966. Thats all the article mentioned about this car. I do not have any other info on it.
Thanks everyone, I had heard this was Watsons first lace job, wasn't sure it was true though, so there you go. A very pretty car.
I took that photo a year after the car had been painted. I had not seen any magazine coverage of lace paint work before I saw it in LA a year later. In this day of instant communication, it's hard to believe that there was no magazine coverage of the lace paint at that time. Following my return home to Kansas City after taking that shot in LA, I got a '66 Riviera, dechromed, dropped, Buick wire-wheeled it and lace painted the flat side panel over flake. I showed the Riv in the Midwest and seemed as though I invented the lace painting idea because no one at shows had ever seen it outside of LA. The west coast hot rod magazines were too busy covering go karts, muscle cars or something else in those days. They were showing very few customs and virtually none of the Watson/Joe Anderson mild custom scene that was so huge in LA.
