OK, so what is the guy on the right side of picture, foot on front bumper, white t-shirt, holding and what is he doing ? Looks like a piece of pipe, holding it like a machine gun ?!?

The Ayala Bros. The cover of Motor trend Magazine 1951. Al is welding on the cowl of Gil's 40. Gil is in the upper left. And that is Wally Welch on the fender of the 42.

I was wondering what that thing was on the rig. Makes sense!! Like an old coal miners lantern but in a much bigger version. Found an old military one on line, but it's still smaller than that thing!

Apparently still used in some other countries.

One of my favorite magazine covers. Have it framed and hanging in my car room at home.

Yes, 40 Mercs look like that... It's sort of like a hard top... The pillars come off.

it said that merc ran 129 mph, i have this pic. I was wondering if it might be an earlier version of the car before the front was kustomized. Check out the early spokes on the front too.

I think that it is...Gil loved to race, and I think this shot is on Rikster's site, along with a shot of Hank Griffith's custom at the Saugus drags.

I probably got it from rik's site. I downloaded it because me and a buddy were arguing whether the 30's type spokes would be strong enough to run on a 40's or 50's car without busting spokes. It looks like it might have an early axle too, due to the narrow looking track. Very interesting.

  21. Hey Rik, I have never seen any complete pics of the Wally Welch merc since it has been finished, do you have any shots of it? Interior? Hubcaps? Engine ? Just wondering how it came out.

Nope.. have not seen any update photos of it since I saw it a year ago at the Mercury Gathering in Sacramento. Dont know if it has been completed, or if it was on hold... I guess if it had been finished it would have been at the GNRS???

All I have Jeff... it shows the hubcaps.. and I was told it had the engine back in it now, but still needed the interior. But this was a couple of month ago (February) so perhaps by now it has been finished.

If I ever get around to my merc I definitely want to paint it the Wally Welsh/early Bettancourt green/gold color because it needs to be done.

Pat Ganahl found one of the real color photos that was used for the Motor Trend cover that this thread was started with.
