4 doors make great Gassers. Extra weight to the rear for better traction. Well that's what we figured. Here are a couple of shots of my 4-door Prefect. I was also told that Anglia, Prefect and Themes were all made by Ford of England and if it had 2 doors it was an Anglia. If it had 4 doors it was a Prefect.

I have a 55 Ford fordor and was thinking of making a gasser .
There are more 4 doors than 2 doors made anyway . I personally would rather have a 4 door . I would love to see a nice 55-57 Old Gasser ! Remember , if you have enough HP under the hood , you can get most anything down the track in 11 sec !

Here are both of mine. First is my 37 Willys sedan. Blown SBF, 4 spd, yes it is an axles car, but dropped, ladder bar rear with narrowed 9". It was at the 2008 HAMB drags, and part of the 2008 Hot Rod Power Tour. THe other is my 42 sedan, which is more street roddy, 350/350, etc. I've also had several Anglias, and Prefects, and 1 1948 Austion A40 4dr as well. I'll try and find pics.

One of mine is a 4 door and one a 2 door coupe. My old Austin gasser I built in 2010. I took the outside rear door handles off and welded the holes closed, but they still open from the inside.

I thought this one looked pretty cool. If I were younger I’d build one like it from the 4 dr I have.

    Hello,

In our neck of So Cal, we lived near Lion’s Dragstrip, when it was still active and a centerpiece of all drag racing back during those 55 to 72 racing days. We lived through the opening days, as it was located just a few blocks from our old Westside of Long Beach house. We saw some of the most prolific drag racers around.

Being influenced by our friend and neighbor, who already had a 34 Ford 5 window coupe with an Oldsmobile motor, we had already gone to the drag to watch him race. It was exciting and made us want to get involved. it was my brother’s idea to do something like the friend’s 34 coupe. but, one of the fastest gas coupe/sedans winning almost every race was a 4 door sedan. And a Studebaker at that !!! \

The sound of our own car with the open exhaust was pretty nice. But, the sound of the SBC motor in the Studebaker 4 door sedan was outstanding. Every time I showed our friends the most recent films I had taken at the previous weeks Lion’s Dragstrip competition, when the black 4 door came up, everyone knew the sound. Although my films were silent, the sound was getting famous and it was funny listening older teenagers making their own sounds that matched the film action, while shifting through the gears for the quarter mile action. BBBRRRRR, SHIFT,BBBRRRR, SHIFT, and so on to the end of the race.

Speed Engineering was the brain child of two local Bixby Knolls racers, Tom McEwen and Ronnie LeGrand. They were drag racers in Bixby Knolls and at the local Lion’s Dragstrip almost every weekend. They were part responsible for the record setting performance at the 1958 Nationals at OKC where Jr. Thompson was the Little Eliminator Champion.

Here is the one film I took during the summer of 1959. It was a point and shoot fixed lens 16mm color movie camera. The film ran and was saved on the metal reel for a long time until 2015, when I finally decided to get all 16mm color films and VHS tapes digitized. Now, the films could be seen on any device, including our large screen TV. Yes! But, then I decided to include an actual sound recording of Junior Thompson at the 1959 U.S. Nationals in Detroit to my films, until they matched the action of my filming.

The 41 Studebaker 4 door sedan was a product of Junior Thompson’s creativity and help from the owners of the local speed shop, SPEED ENGINEERING. The shop was owned by none other than Tom McEwen in his younger days and not quite the “top fuel king”… as yet.

    power shifting at its finest…

A normal level stance with a powerful motor at the start, then goes sky high at the power resurgence at shifts. The nose up is the look that became famous in the late 60s into the 70s for fake street versions of the original gas coupes/sedans from the late 50s and early 60s. YRMV

This is what we heard every time we saw him race at Lion’s Dragstrip:

    Note:

One of the 4 door Studebaker’s competitive racers was none other than Al Hirshfield in his two door Studebaker sedan. They had many close battles in competition in the Gas Coupe/Sedan classes.
