Last weekend picked up a 58 392 Hemi. Got that baby home , tore it down and she was cleaner than a hounds tooth. Wanting to build a good driver with some good blown thump. Any pros or cons on this, want to be able to driver to the moon if i wanted to.What blower, cam, rods etc.
Buy it.. Read it.. Learn it... Live it. http://www.hotrodhandbooks.com.au/hemi.htm A good start for your project. I think amazon sells it.

Great score on the Hemi. Glad you got a clean one. Pics would be nice. The Hemi book mentioned is worth its weight in Horse Power. You won't put it down.
You will have them, not joking. I gave a thousand for her from a guy in Highlands,Texas. The old 58 was this old hippies mothers car that just rusted to the ground after she p***ed some time ago. They say he never worked a day in his life and the old house is falling down around him. There was no lip in the cylinder or anything. I also have an old 56 330 Desoto Hemi that i havent torn into yeat. Ill get some pics on it to.
6-71 blower... run about 8 lbs of boost with an 8 to 1 piston. Stock rods will be fine if you don't beat the **** out of it. Good pistons are needed... I had Venolia build mine but Ross are good, too. I have a Dyer's blower drive... paid $20.00 for my 6-71 and spent about $400.00 having Rick Dean convert it for gas and supply the rear plate and parts. Cragar manifold works good as does a Weiand. Hot Heads stuff looks too street roddy to me. The 392 heads will be fine... some guys will steer you to the '55 high port "555" heads but you won't need 'em unless you need a couple more HP. I spent less the 5K doing my 354... they are only expensive to do if you have to buy all the aftermarket ****. I have a stock front cover, run a 392 water pump, stock exhaust (looks correct), etc.
Krooser what your telling me is an old 6-71 blower off an old diesel engine will work fine if Dean works on it. I know where there are two or three of those. Do you have Deans number ?
GREAT tip, right there! Tell us more about what you scored for that 6-71? Off a diesel as mentioned, right? Been thinking very seriously about doing this for a future build. I don't like the new stuff either.
scooter, It,s easy enough to convert it yourself. I,ve done half a dozen or more.Put 25000 miles on the last one with no problems. My son is running a wade blower off a diesel on his rod and must have 30000+ miles on it now.
Scoot - they are PISS easy to convert yourself, its been discussed on the HAMB before dude. Im goin the same way with the Desoto Hemi as you know - Hemi heads like to breathe DEEP and HARD..... 6-71 will be just the ticket, on its way over as we speak. Another little project for me to get stuck into when ready - hmmmm, HAMB tech article? Rat
Nothing quite like having a blown 392 in the shop... ...and the guys are right, a reliable daily driver does not require all of the shiny bits that fill the various catalogues. .
Congratulations! You are TASKED to doing a rebuild tech thread and fitment to a DeSoto Hemi!! Keep us posted!
Man-O-Man just got off the phone with a bud and he said he could put his hands on two 6-71s right now, price yeat to be discussed. Now lets talk manifold for the Desoto, where do you get one ?
Well, they don't exist as such. The usual path is to either build a u-fab piece or cut the top off of a stock/aftermarket manifold and affix a mounting plate to accept the blower. Best bet is to check this thread and ask 39 the question. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218550 .
Pretty ***y little mill ya' got there, Kroos!! I wondered what you were up to! I like the whole package...
All MOPAR driveline... B body torsion bar front suspension... has rear leafs now but I think it will wind up with C10 truck arms. Has shortened GMC box... a real ****rel. Gotta find someplace to put Nash and Hudson parts to give it some variety!
coe ed rat I told you you would get the answers you wanted here. Kip, scootermad has 392 pistons for sale too!
