Metal porn

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Imperial Wheeling Machine, Mar 12, 2009.

  1. A master metalshaper friend, Dutch Comstock, told me that the difference between a TIG welder and a GOOD TIG welder was about 2000 hours. Personally, I've got about 1850 to go but I keep practicing and aspiring to lay down that perfect 'row of dimes'. Come close a few times on short runs...

But here is some inspiration from someone who has really, REALLY mastered the task.

A friend of mine can lay down beads just like that. I swear he has made a pact with the devil. It's amazing to put on a hood and look over his shoulder while he welds. After watching him you'd swear you could do as well or better, but picking up a torch your quickly reminded of how easy it is to deceive yourself.

Even if it was a robot someone had to program the thing. All new parts, fairly thick material, years of experiance, I'm sure some really gifted guy did that.

  12. It's not a robot. If you read through the whole thread, the guy (john Marcella) says he did it all by hand. He uses a Miller Dynasty and rarely uses the pulser.

What is AMAZING is the consistency! Every weld, every position!

  14. Pffftttftftftffffffffttttttttttt! Truly nice welds but the bicycle guys have been doing it for years. FTW=Frank the Welder aka Frank Wadelton, Sherman Gibson=Electric Sex aka Ventana bicycles............all show AND go! Add those names to about 15,000 12 year old Chinese girls that can weld better than all of us and you got a game! ;)

Yeah, but keep in mind, someone had to design and engineer all that stuff too and then make all the pieces and hold it together perfectly and then weld every weld without f'n any of them up and distorting the whole thing in the process. Good bicycle guys can do some truly beautiful welds and strong too. But, they also tend to be very repetitive and make a lot of the same or almost the same welds over and over. I doubt those pieces were very high volume if not just total one offs and they are very tricky and complicated forms. It is not just the welds, it's the whole package. Not sure it is very traditional, but what the hell, that is some damn nice work no matter who did it, how old they are, what country they live in or how it was done.

THere sure is an art to it. I use to sell laser cut, and cnc formed parts for a company here in town called ATI Procharger. They ordered intake and alum. rad parts buy the 1000's . TOured there shop. Little ladies welding aluminum like that all day long. Not saying his work is not top notch, and I can not do it, but with good fixtures, fit, material, and practice, yours too could look like that.

I cant stand production welding, so stopped while I was ahead. I probably welded 2000+ drywall banjo's for gold blat in the 90's. UGGG.

None the less. Rock on wayne.

Every time I start thinking I might actually be getting good at welding someone throws one of these threads in my face and I wind up curled up in a ball rocking back and forth in the corner!

Not the guys he's talking about. Frank built a one off downhill bike for me a long time ago. He did all the machine work too. It was one sexy beast. Never should have sold it.

But yeah, after clicking that link I want to start over on my turbo project. lol

Very cool pictures...Man, guys that can weld like that freak me out! It's like they're damn Cyborgs or something!...Maybe they are? I have a friend-Danny Haulot at Northbay Welding in Novato, CA, that can weld like that-on stainless and aluminum. He tried to show me a few times-No way, all thumbs...I'll stick with the Mig-like using a caulking gun...
