I see by the search function that someone inquired about this paint not long ago. My question is has anybody actually used it? If so any comments good or bad? The price on this stuff, the kits and gallons seem really resonable, but is it cheap for a reason? As a rookie painter would it be worth the cost just to try it and not be out a lot of $$$ if it weren't that great. They sell base/clear kits for like $172 and claim its "everything you need" to repaint you car.
I don't know which paint you are talking about but some of the cheaper paints[Shop line for PPG] are good enough for a daily driver. I know some of the cheap stuff is junk also. What brand are you talking about?
He might be speaking of the "DUPLI-COLOR" kits. One of the guys used it for his 20 footer. But he has handled a gun before and i m sure he made it look better than expected.
Your better off saving for better quality paint. The cheaper stuff is cheaper for a reason. It usually will not hold up in sunlight (even the clearcoat breaks down) and will chalk up alot quicker than you would think. It will also look really good and glossy while wet, and then flattens in as it dries. If your bucks down right now, you could always use acrylic enamel for spray and shine, then 1000 grit it and clear coat it when you can afford it later. Just my 02. from a guy that used to paint professionally and still sling mud, weld and spray with my bud Gary every week on our junk Chris
Currently helping a friend with a pick-up truck project and we are using that line of paints. The primer appears good and blocked down nicely. The truck will be shot with a single stage urethane next week, I will let you know about the results.
Please do so. I respect the opinions expressed here on this board and I know there has to be many that have "been there done that" people. I have not purchased any paint materials for my current project yet, but like everyone else, always lookin for a bargain. Looks like so far I better keep lookin too.
Watch out, some of that Dupli Color stuff is ready to spray Laquer. There are better alternatives today. They sell it here at Murrays for 30 a quart ready to spray. You can go to a paint jober and buy one of the big brands econo lines for a little more. PPG has Shopline, Dupont has Nason, BASF has Limpco. I would go that route and have local tech help. Support Your Local Jobbers!!!!!
Someone sells the paint on eBay and goes by the name Paintforcars. I bought some to paint my boat a few summers ago. Like they say, there is a reason it sells for less. The solid white I used on the hull went on fine and still looks great. Nice and shiny, easy to clean off the water-line shadow you get from the lakes. The metallic purple I used for the top and deck went on great. Even though I used a hardener, it stayed soft and delicate for days afterward. It looked really nice. We treated it really nice for the first summer. Later in the summer it seemed fully cured. When I tarped it in the fall, then decided to go out one more time, I found that the tarp which I carefully put on, had left light imprints on certain corners of the boat where it contacted. Kind of like "blanketface" when you wake up from a nap. The purple metallic paint was still easy to imprint. The solid white held up fine. After two or three summers in the daylight the purple started looking weathered. It looked like ten year old paint by the third summer. I was just about to temporarily freshen it up with a quick scuffing and fresh clearcoat to get a few more summers out of it, when I was offered a good price for the boat, weathered paint and all, so I sold it. Be prepared for the paint to look old before it's time. It sure did look awesome for the first summer. The white hull, which didn't get hit with the same direct sunlight rays as the purple deck, looked nice the whole time. Yep, you certainly can sell it cheap if you leave out a few important ingredients.
If you want cheap and i have to say cheaper that dupont or ppg but quality stuff then try Kirker. Ive used it and its a lot cheaper than the other stuff and sprays well ... They dont have factory colors but they hAVE MANY DIFFERENT COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM... check pg 14 i think it is of their photo album ...
Haven't used this but there is also a series of articles in the last couple of Streetrodder magazines that discuss this new paint sold by Summitt. http://blogs.popularhotrodding.com/6340035/tech/summit-paint-system/index.html
I would recommend developing a relationship with a local paint shop. They can help price out paint based on your budget and expected quality, and support the product they sell. A good paint shop will have employee's who really know the product, and you can call them for advice and know that the advice is reputable. Buying paint online seems risky to me.
I just bought the Dupli Color yesterday. I bought 2 qts of prime,2qts of white, and 1 qt. of multi color sparkle. Its my first paint job,so I'll see how it goes. From what I hear on the H.A.M.B, you get what you pay for,and I only paid 22 bucks a can. I did all the work and prep on the car myself,so if it doesnt work well, all it will really cost is another summer of sweatin and preppin for a better quality paint job. If its going on a daily driver than I guess its worth a shot. Good luck to ya!
So I've been doing research on this very subject. It seems that the reviews on the paintforcars.com are mixed. Customer service/shipping has been an issue for some, some with true horror stories. Supposedly the trick is to buy from ebay so you have better recourse, or at minimum use a credit card. Speculation here is for better results with paintforcars paint, use a better activator for better durability, hardness, and shine. This would seem to match the experience noted above. Here's the quote from barryk "I know your trying to get out cheap and that will be a good paint to practice with but consider this, you could go to a DuPont store or a PPG store and buy either 793 activator in Dupont 76% ISO solids or Dxr 80 in PPG 79.5% solids by volume and activate the rayflex with that. It will totally make it a different paint altogether as far as gloss, color clarity (depending on color) and most important durability of the paint. The activator you got with the product is most likely in the 30% range if I had to guess. The pint of activator with the majors might cost you an extra 30-40 dollars but believe me it will be worth it.' For a lot of reasons I think I'm going with kirker, at smartshoppersinc.com Speculation is the summit paint is just rebadged kirker, which seems to be common practice, and someone said summit's paint color names were the same as kirker too. Here's what you get from smartshoppersinc.com for under $300 shipped. At my local jobber store a gallon of dupont's value line Nicon? can't remember but it's $150ish a gallon, that I *DO* remember. 1gal. of 2k High build Urethane primer/sealer (buff or grey) with Activator 3/4Gal. of Urethane Color (50+ Colors Available) with Activator 1gal. of EC100 Clear Coat With Activator 1qt Urethane reducer 15 Paint sticks, & 15 Strainers 1 Spray Suit, & 1 Spray Sock 3 rolls of Masking Tape 6 Tack rags 3 count 1qt mixing cups , for easy mixing Instruction sheet for mixing all products
Now days unless your painting every week i wouldnt expect a great discount from your local ppg or dupont supplier.. I just got some ppg product for the inner fairing on my harley and ive bought there before and also used their other store for years when I was painting for a living.. No discount. sure they are very helpful but they are pretty firm on price.. There is a lot to be said to buying the name brand stuff and the part of the price that contains the name .. Its getting bad when 2 1/2 pints of paint cost 94.00 yup thats two one half pints ... The last ppg paint I bought was like 4 years ago and it was 1 pint of prowler orange to match my coupe.. 68.00 .... pretty pricey stuff and remember to stay away from anything with red in it ... Sure wish now id have bought a black harley I will say though that ppg's clears are nice.. Its pretty heavy stuff but it dries hard and i like that ... Be prepared to pay out the *** for the clears too. Dave Oh ya Matt i think his name is at Kirker contacted me the other day about putting pics on the web site of my roadster .. Of course i said yes and today i got a sweet Kirker T shirt in the mail... Thanks Kirker .. free spam
Thank all of you for your insight, opinions, and knowlege on this subject. I have done as some suggested and became rather well acquainted with a seasoned painter who is getting me into a Dupont product line. to make matters better he is only 3 miles from my house. THANKS you guys! you are the best as always
Just wanted to follow-up like I said I would. We got the truck into the spray booth on Saturday. The guy who works at the shop as a full time painter with 25+ years experience mixed the paint and shot it on a test panel, TERRRIBLE! No matter what he did to adjust the reducer or hardner the paint would not lay down even in a temperature controlled booth. Ended up mixing PPG product and shooting the truck with base-coat clear-coat. Truck looks good. Bottom line, stick with the name brand, there is too much prep work that would be wasted if you use sub-par material.
I have had good luck with the paint but like they say you get what you pay for. It is a good cheap paint not something for a show car. I used the urathane . The metallic is a bear to shoot. There are pics in my profile the model a and the 45 1 ton .
Just in case someone searches this like I did. I used this paint for my car. I used Base/Clear Champagne Gold and it laid out very nice. i got the "best" clear and it was very smoothe. I was able to color sand with 3000 grit. So far i have had no issues. (paint is only a couple weeks old) For $200 for the whole shooting match i thought it was well worth it. Especially for a car that is not a high dollar show car. let's face it, if you're building a high $$$ show car you ain't worried about High$$$ anyway. Good paint for us poor folk!
Nothing like staring into 1 layer deep hand squeegee'd vinyl wrap huh? If vinyl wraps can survive on the hamb, then traditional hot rods are dead for sure. I'd rather see a brush and a quart of rustoleum on a hot rod. Now for the street rod fluffy foo foo guys, you may be onto something. Give me a break.
The zombie thread Love em. I seen a vinyl wrap at a show. Looked good. Friend of mine does them at his body shop it’s a service offered cause customers asked for it. The fun part is its always high end customers. Color change on a Ferrari? 6k vinyl vs 25k the conventional way and it’s not permanent. Usually removed when selling or trading. One to 2 week turnaround vs a few months is usually the big issue. I’ll probably wrap my current OT project. the misconception is that it hides poor body or prep work. It doesn’t but maybe minor scratches Panels still need to be straight, align and even large sand scratches will eventually show through. Does it belong here? That’s what the bosses are for.
In the early 50s, Newhouse Industries of LA offered large vinyl graphics to customers. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.he...e-hemmings-nation-flickr-pool-boing-g-g-g/amp
Laughing my ****ing *** off!!!!!!! Then get ya some computer cut out pinstripes. Sometimes I have to hit the "show ignored content" just to see what's going on
I put together a couple beater cars every year. 15 (or so) year old cars that I find along the road for sale. Bumped fenders, peeling paint ect. I have tried most of the cheap paint kits on Ebay. Paint for Cars cracked and faded in about 18 months. TPC paints seem to last the longest, but are not the cheapest. There are other small places that sell paint on there that I have tried. Some cheaper some not as cheap. You never know how they will last. Most spray ok. I generally use single stage urethane paints for these cars. Most of the time the paint lasts longer than the cars. lol
If I could find a business willing to pay me to run a wrap on my daily driver, I'd probably do it depending on what the subject matter was. On my '46 or T, no way.
