I purchased an upper and lower tubular a arm set for my Mustang II crossmember and with it came two flat triangle pieces of steel. The problem is that I have no idea what they are for. If anyone could tell me I would appreciate it. Thanks! Greg
Gussets for the lower control arm pivot. A better way is to use a piece to capture the end of the pivot bolt at the rear bushing in double shear. jerry
there should also be two tubes to weld to the crossmember. the tubes make the crossmember the width of the lower a arm, and the triangle gussets the tube. search for some of ElPolacko's or my posts on MII problems and you can see some solutions for the problems created by that design.
Here are links to a couple of El Polacko's posts that GreggAZ mentioned, they're essential reading for Mustang II installations: "Mustang II chronicles, failure abounds": http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257826&showall=1 "How to Mustang II, Deux!": http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70073&showall=1
I used the Ch***is Engineering bolt in kit (1949 Chevy) and it already has the tube for the lower a arm in it as part of the crossmember. My lower a arm fit perfect and bolted right in. Do I still need to do anything with the gussets or are those only used if I have to weld in tubes? You'll have to forgive my ignorance, this is my first "major" project.
Please watch this video from the link posted above very closely. I don't think it need to be said any more clearly.
Thanks for the info. I see what you're getting at and where they go now. The ch***is engineering crossmember already has two gussets welded in and they go all the way to the end of the tube. I'm ***uming they biult it right and ready to go? I can put a photo on to make suer though.
