Damn, double damn and now possibly triple damn. Florida's a mess. The last weekend to make money in the season is over. We've taken an enormous financial beating, if we didn't own our properties we might have had to shut our doors. Frances wasn't as powerful as Charley but it was huge, there are still tropical force winds and torrential rain even as I speak. I'm at my warehouse, I haven't had power since 6.55 p.m Saturday. The last of my shadetrees fell on my carport. My Capri was in it's path and because the brakes were locked I had to put a chain on it and drag it out of the way. My '54 Chevy's right where the tree fell, but thanfully the carport's sturdy enough that it didn't collapse.....yet. The city opened the parking garage at the courthouse for anyone who needed to have undercover parking, I took the '60 wagon there. The hot rod's safe in the warehouse. It seems kinda pathetic to be talking about replaceable cars when people have lost their entire homes and livliehoods, but this is a car board. Draglinks is stuck somewhere in Lake City with the water pump gone kaput in the *****in' Van. I hope he and his family make it home OK. This has been the most miserable Labor Day Weekend of my life, in fact the whole last twon months have ****ed. Mother Nature will win everytime. Later brothers.
It's not so much the wind here as the water. The back yard is a lake and the street is about a foot deep. I'm just waiting for low tide as the storm surge is a *****. Stay safe and keep dry.
I was watching the news last night and hoping you guys were all doing ok. Looked like you were taking a ****-kicking. Really glad to hear you're ok. Any news from other Florida HAMBers? I didn't know Ivan was coming until I saw the news last night. I think I'll stick to salty roads and the occasional snow storm. Keep those hatches battened down. Good luck.
glad to hear your doing ok nads. sorry you didn't make it up to atlanta. i broke down in lake city awhile back on the way back from daytona. the manager at the advance auto parts helped me out big time. a water pump in a van! ouch! that ****s! especially if it's raining.
[ QUOTE ] Suddenly snowstorms don't seem all that bad [/ QUOTE ] amen. good luck nads, glad you're ok. Keep us posted. If you need anything, please let us know kris
Nads, glad to see you came thru with only bruises. We missed you in Atl. ****s Mike is having problems with the Van. He is bring you a present from me. I truly believe Ivan will stay south and find alternate land to find...
Good to hear you guys are doing okay. I lost half of my seawall into the lake and my boat was in the neighbor's yard. We've been really lucky with the wind and tree damage. One of my neighbors lost a 60ft pine tree right onto his shed. We're still getting a lot of wind and rain which ****s since the lake is up to the top of the seawall at my place right now. I guess it could be worse, my next door neigbor's yard is COMPLETELY under water. Anybody needs anything, give me a shout. We got lucky (again) this time.
It's just about over, we never lost power, but all around us did (sometimes it's good to be a block away from Largo P.D. and City Hall). Roof leaked over our eaves and the eaves came apart, we are getting a new roof in 2 months anyway. Wind was howling pretty good yesterday and this morning. I had the house "hunkered down" early and never really undid it from Charley. I just feel sorry for the people in Polk county getting whacked twice. I'll say it again, God hates mobile homes.
I talked to HotRodWalt, he lost power, but is ok. I just got power back (off for 12 hours). One small tree fell behind the shop...missed the 52 vicky by 5 inches. Some other trees fell in the woods behind the house, I could hear them coming down, but couldn't see them. We had 5 inches of rain today, but it drained into the creek out back. MBL's on the road back from New Orleans...but said the conditions aren't that bad. DrnknLncln...said the river by his place is flooding, but not up to his house yet. It's funny how when we call to check on each other, we always ask "How's your shop?" instead of "How's your house?"
Hang Tough, this to shall p***!You can give me Earth Quakes any day.I hear most of Fla.is in the same boat(bad choice of words)in that Labor Day Week End is when every one gets well financially. My sympathies. Mother Nature is not mean or vindictive, she is only indifferent. Better luck, Pogo
It's 9:30 p.m our power just came back on. I went and got the '60 from the courthouse, nothing missing , nothing stolen. A neighbor came by with a total stranger neighbor, and we chopped the tree down. Swiss Mike and Impala Dave came by too, the tree's gone, I'll bring the Hot Rod home tomorrow. I gotta say, I've got the best friends and neighbors that anybody can hope for. It makes me so happy that we all pulled together and helped each other in a time of need. Forgive me if I seem ***gy, but the burden lifted off of our shoulders by our friends and neighbors can never be payed back, all we can do is to help others in need without any thought of a payback. The good feelings are payback enough. My heart is full of love, thank you all for your kind words and deeds, I'll try to be as unselfish in the futire as I possibly can. I'm no hippy, but I do believe that love conquers all.
There is good in people when bad things happen. I was thinking about you guys all weekend long and hoping for the best. It's hard to imagine why this happens in one area of the world and in another area they are crying for water.
Good to hear the helpfull hand's easing the load. It's not 'hippy or ***gy'. You said it all: Love. Macho and hate and tough guy attidude's make life harder than it need's to be. Here's to better day's ahead!
