  1. Fellow---thats uglier than **** on a stick!!! You should either spend a bunch more money on rattle cans or else have left it alone.

Oh, and at 18 you didn't do anything like this? C'mon, he's a kid, cut him some slack. Sure, he needs to redo the paint, but at least he's doing something with the old car.

    Uglier than **** on a stick? Sheesh.

The HAMB has tons of college student builders. I was once one, even while working 3 jobs and being BROKE. Eye on the prize has been mentioned, project cars represent why you're putting yourself thru that.

But if somebody's casual and just wanting flashy wheels, yeah, why bother? **** it, when you graduate you can afford AAA and a repair shop like a real hot rodder.

Last time I spoke to him he was doing the college thing. Don't know now. This car looks good in person but with the new paint just hit it up with some more to smooth it out. My 1st rattle can primer was worse. Just do what you do man.

So let me get this right, are you really saying he should put a car before his education? Because that's what it sounds like when you tell someone they should work 3 jobs to support a *hobby* while they're in college.

In my book, that's ****ed up.

The prize I mentioned isn't a spray bombed '58 Ford. It's having an education that allows you to get a job to support your family.

You'd give that advice to your own kids?!? I call ********. The end.

You win, Tuffy Tuffterson, you're way more of a real hot rodder than I am. Because everybody knows posting 3300! times since 2006 and not supporting the hamb with an alliance membership means you're a *REAL* hotrodder! Maybe you could put some of that $50 you saved to help this kid buy some paint after you **** all over his work, big talker?!?

and yup, I have a AAA card(I suppose you push your car home?) that I use when my car breaks and I pay to have it repaired since its an emergency. I live in an apartment in Los Angeles and don't have anywhere else to tow my car *TO* , I borrow friend's driveways or backyards to work on it but that doesn't mean I can just show up at odark thirty with my junker on a hook.

I wrote the guy and gave him my number if he wants to discuss this further.

It's work first, toys second, and you're an idiot for saying otherwise.

EDIT: Wait, doing the math....you were a college builder and on the hamb, you've been a member since 2006...you're mid 20's?!? No wonder you know it all! Congrats! I sure wish I did.

Ouch. SOme of you guys are tough on the kid.

The ONLY thing that matters is .... IS THE CAR HELPING YOU GET LAID???

I would have driven a a friggin shopping cart if it would have got me laid more at his age.

  8. Sorry Charlie, I thought your car pics were the before photo's...yuck...
If you want to clean up your ride, try what I do.....HOUSEPAINT!!!!!!! I've Painted a few cars with waterbased laytex housepaint and have been very pleased with the results. A gallon usually cost less than $20 and you can get the hardware store to match and mix nearly any color that you want. Or just go to the color samples and grab every shade that catches your eye. Get a semi gloss and it gives a great 1/2 flat sheen that looks like all the hot rod flat paints that are all the rage today. I've had plenty of people mistake my laytex jobs for real paint!!! Not to mention that a flatter color helps hide all the dents. Now I useually paint over rust holes and leave them open but on some cars I have done the bodywork with duct tape.
Apply the paint with a roller where you can for a nice smooth finish and use a brush only for the hard to reach spots. Or you could spray the housepaint possibly, but i've never tried this. Just remember to scuff and clean the body to prep and watch out for rain. Water or evening dew will lift it back up so you want to paint early on a warm day. If you want to see examples check out my profiles 5 photo albums for my magenta 59 chevy, some of my yard art, or the spray on whitewalls that I put on my Cadillac. Good luck, and keep enjoyin the real steel, as beat as it may be...And put up some pics when your done...

  10. Yeah, don't sell your car man, Get it looking, good, cl***y, or cl***ic, and your parents should stop complaining....As it is now it looks like an eyesore. That's why they don't like seeing it. great car, great curves, great lines, it's just a washed out blahish color... As far as cleaning it, the laquer thinner should work, and get EXTRA fine steel wool to clean the gl*** , chrome, and stainless. (Go easy) I also use westleys bleachwhite tire cleaner to clean chrome. It's slightly acidic.

All cars are money pits. Even your Hyundai is a money pit. Yeah you don't see many 58 Fords. For some reason everyone seems to hate them. As a fellow 58 Ford owner, I've followed all your posts. You've dropped a bunch of time and money into that car to get it to where it is now. Yes, you need to do a better primer job....but what the hell, it's just spray primer! Consider this just practice. I'm torn on you selling it. Obviously we don't know your entire financial status, and I think many of us were where you are today. When I was 18, I was driving a gray spray primered 72 Chevelle Malibu. When I wanted to change it up a bit, I sprayed red primer on it! It ****ed gas, had rust out in the fender wells, but was my only ride. If your car is paid for, and you can't part with it, maybe you should park it for a while and concentrate on making more money. Then come back to it later. Obviously your education comes first, but how much money could you actually get from your 58? I see you still need to do a lot of body work, and that gets expensive really fast. You ever think of taking any body work cl***es for your electives? You'd have the project car! Sounds like you have some hard decisions to make, but never forget what you're working for.

Oh yeah, you're 18 and you voluntarily come on here and get kicked in the nuts...you got balls! :D

Feel free to PM me if you're looking for parts. I might still have what you need laying around.

So, you call your car a 1958 Fairlane. Isn't it actually a Custom 300? (that was my first car)

Here's a '58 Fairlane: (note the difference in the fins, roofline, trim)

Your 58 is lookin good man, but most of all I'm glad to see you have it running well and on the road. Good for you. The memories you will create on the road will be with you forever.

As far as selling the car, JUST SAY NO! Don't take this the wrong way, but your car is probably worth $1500. So if you sell it, you have a Hyundai and $1500... cool. How much is $1500? It's not ****. You couldn't pay for half a semester of community college with that. So **** it, keep the car. If it breaks, take it off the road for a while until you have the money to fix it. You still have the daily to get you around.

I've had my 57 since I was a senior in high school. I'll be 25 this year and I'm still in your shoes. It ****s, there were extended periods of time where it was off the road with a blown motor, rear, shot front end, bad brakes... you name it. If I had the money, I fixed it. If I didn't, it sat until I did. If I sold it when times got tough, I would have been maybe 8 grand richer...whoopie. I'm now 100K deep and counting in law school debt.

Selling the car isn't the be all, end all solution of your financial woes. So you might as well keep it and enjoy it. Good luck

...i know my paint job isnt the best but i just wanted to be unique. i understand i should have taped it but i was to excited. my buddy Vito who went to wyotech said he will hook me up with a decent paint job pretty soon.
i mean, i can see why people would get angry or maybe mad at what i've done. im not some rich kid with 2 jobs anymore. i was jobless for 3 months and had no source of income, and a girlfriend who i spent all my money on. i'm not taking any of your critizim's to heart though, i know its just opinions, we are all en***led to them.

personally im not gonna sell this. only if i can get a 1930's truck, then i will. i wanna sell that hyundai and get a newer truck or something. and my 63 ranchero i am selling for sure.

but yea i will more than likley go back over that roof with gray primer. it just looks pretty plain... then i'll redo it, i gotta focus more on my interior now though anyway.. but yea.

thanks to those who do like the look. for those who dont its all good. we all got our vision of a 'cool look' in our head. this just happens to be mine

  15. stay on it.. if i had your at***ude at 18 i probably wouldnt be the ***hole i am today..

I was thinking what Tumbleweed just wrote. There's A LOT of guys on here much older than you who get their ******* in a bunch when somebody doesn't like their car (can't say I'm exempt from that crowd either) A good at***ude will take you a long way. Good luck with your project.

Yeah, and which is more likely to take a ****...that old Ford or the Hyundai? I say dump the Huynadi and keep that money back for when something breaks on the '58.

The only way to master rattle can painting is to try try try again. Don't give up. When I was 18 I decided to fix a rust hole on my car and the next thing you know I had primed the whole quarter! Dad was not thrilled as my car - in his words - looked like **** and should be gotten rid of. But the more I painted the quarter the better my primer looked.
I used to ride my bike or drive my car around on weekends in my neighborhood looking for guys who were weekend mechanics. Some were 10 or 20 years older than me but most were thrilled to help. You have 75% of the battle won - you have a car, you are not afraid to take on challenges and you handle criticism from others well. Almost all of us look back at being your age as one of the best times of our lives but we kind of forget the money struggle and only remember the freedom from adult responsibilities.
Good luck and keep going. Look for people in the area to help out. Talk to your parents with your plan. Surprisingly they may just not see your vision.
Wal-mart and dollar stores sell rattle cans with a wide variety of colors for a little over a buck a can. Take your time and paint the roof real nice and your ride will take one big step forward.

HOLY ****! You know maybe this car is keeping this "kid" out of trouble. Im 21 all through highschool people would ask me to go party. Id say Nah I have plans to work on my car/truck. I wanted to fit in with people I guess but I knew if I went out and partied there would be problems. So I stayed home. Cars/Trucks/Hot Rods/Customs what ever it maybe be are an addiction them selves.

Dont sell it man! I regret selling the stuff I have already sold and Im young too! Almost every one out there in HAMB-Land does the same. Yeah some of us buy the biggest rat/sinks holes known to man, But its wht it turns out to be in the end.

If you got it running good all tuned up and under the hood is cleaned and stuff then get it saftly driveable check the brakes out the steering suspension.
Thats stuff is more important than the body work at this point. Look through pictures here on the HAMB from the late 40's and 50s most cars are in rough primer...
The main thing are the mechanics and make it road worthy and safe for you and others on the road. Then move to body work and paint then interior.

Hey Moonami, this is O/T, but I just happened to think of a movie you might like. The name of the film is Wise Blood, and it was made here in Macon in 1979 (directed by John Huston). Anyhow, the main character in the film drives a beater '58 Ford and it gets plenty of screen time. Good luck with the project.

I was talking about Luvzccr's car. I see yours is a Fairlane, but he also calls his a Fairlane in the ***le of this thread. I was just trying to let him know the correct model name of his car - a Custom 300.

    from nowhere...

AAA when you break??! Hell...Thats what my trailer is for...
    ;)
    Well...and racing...
The '58 needs more coverage, rattle cans or not, though...
and yes, smooth, straight lines, not circles. keep it moving, and use your thumb, not your fingers, on the nozzle. More control, and your thumb can take more abuse longer. If you prepped even a little bit, it would save you time later ( laquer thinner works, but your scrubbing arm will get tired, thats for sure ) and pay dividends on what time it takes...
I'm just starting a '58 Ranchero. Nice car, I hope you keep it, and suffer for your love...it builds, a**** other things, character, not just cars.
Oh yeah, and a work ethic!

When I was his age I pinstriped my car with tape and thought it was awesome.

He's got style. Any style is better than no style.

I like the green, but when money allows, spray a few more coats on it. even if it is only one extra can at a time. over time the roof will fill in and get more solid looking

I say screw selling it as well. Right now, things in the economy **** and they have cut my hours at work but I do what I have to to even it out. Selling on EBAY, swaps, craigslist etc.......you could do the same for some extra money. But NO WAY would I sell my car. It would have to get REAL bad before I even thought of that. The car is one thing that keeps me happy no matter what. Even if I am just looking at it and imagining how I want it or just cleaning something on it makes me happy. And if your car makes YOU happy, f**k what anyone else says.

...your opinion smells like your ***. Nothing constructive to say? Nothing positive to add, just some **** about how you were better when you were his age? Hey, did you ever stop to think that maybe he doesn't have the guidance you did? Oh, no, that wouldn't matter, you're too cool to have needed guidance at 18. Everything you do is just so, and anyone who doesn't live up to your standard is just wasting their time. I've met your type before, why don't you go back into your precious clean well organized overpriced garage and leave the rest of us poor slacker losers alone.

    Creep.
