The '57 Plymouth "cones" were hot back in the day. Man they look super on most any rod or custom! The aftermarket even copied them with some chromed versions, but the copies were never close to the "look" of the real thing. Oh yeah, back to the thread...I like the skinnies, because I couldn't afford them when they first appeared.

  3. My first skinny whites were porta-walls on my '56 Chevy in 1962.

Pinner whites came out on most 1962 cars across the board, '61 for Falcons, Corvairs, Lancers, Valiants and that's fact I just looked it up.
'59 cars back look best with wide whites, '60 and forward look best in skinny whites and that is my opinion!

US Royal Masters had a pie crust sidewall IIRC...

Yep, I thought they were about the best looking tire around at the time but way out of my price range at the time.

The U.S. Royal "Master" name was used at least as far back as 1940. As time progressed, the U.S. Royal top line tire was always the Master. The September '55 catalog sheet shows 3 different Royal Masters ... the regular whitewall we called the curbguard (also available with the outer surface in blue, bronze, or green), the "Star Streak" inchwall, & the XP-140 which was the ribbed sidewall mentioned in the above posts ... all 3 had the same list price starting at $58.95 for the 6.70 to $80.00 for the 8.20. For the he****/ambulance trade, the 8.90 was $114.60 in 6 ply, regular whitewall tube type only. Only 15" sizes were availble in 1955, & the "ribbies" didn't get the "Master" ID on the sidewall until later. Bear in mind you could walk into Wards, Sears, or any gas station during this time period & buy a 6.70x15" 4 ply whitewall for around $8 -$12 !

  12. I recall putting the 3 to 4" wide whitewall portawalls on my parents new
60 Chevy wagon. I also added 57 Dodge style flipper caps (with the
crossed flags and checkered centers) and four 1959 Caddy tail light
lenses (without the chrome part), glued over the actual 60 tail light lenses.
Also bolted together two flared end exhaust tips.....the original pipe
came out behind the rear wheel......so, looked like two pipes coming
out. The funny part.....it was a 6 cyl.

You could even make your own flipper hubcaps back then.
In our small town, you could by the flipper part at the Oklahoma
Tire and Supply Store, or the Western Auto Store===which were
right next door to one another. I then attached those flippers to
1957 Ford full wheel covers, and painted the white center part that
    said Ford.....gold.

The narrow whites did come out in the early 60s, and then they were
followed by the narrow white portawalls. I like both sizes depending
upon what they're used on. I have about 2 1/2 inch wide whites on
my 47 Plymouth.......that's like the late 50s or early 60s size. Just
what I happen to like. I'm 65 now....so I went thru all that stuff
    they've been talking about.

Narrow WWs on my coupe............I think those are a 60s Dodge cap.

  13. I was a kid in the 1960's and my father always had skinny whites on his vehicles. At the time, I hated them.

Now, nothing but gangster whites......(wide of course).

I like Skinny whites or dual white stripe... my only problem is finding a correct tire size for my truck and to fit a 8 inch or 10 wide wheel. Open to suggestions if you have any.

I don't think there is any comparison, Pre 63 cars need wide whites. My 63 had skinny whites when I got it and it had them on it when I got it back from paint, for about a day!

I found 1-1/4" white walls at a local Firestone Dealers. IMHO, it looks perfect for an early-'60's look, especially with the early-'60's wheel covers I picked up at the KKOA in Gettysburg.

I was born in '65 and skinnie white walls were for grandpa's car to drive to church on sunday! I remember when white letters were cool and WWW were vintage. It depends on the era your going for but I will never run 1" white walls on anything because they were NOT cool when I was growing up.

Where I grew up nothing said "old man's car" like skinny whites. Wide whites were another thing altogether, very formal and beautiful on the right kind of car, but a kind of car I've never owned. Blackwalls mean all business, and all business is what my cars are. I've never owned a set of whitewalls of any kind in 42 years of cars, and have no plans to do so.

  26. I'm old enough to remember both styles and thought the change to the narrow WW's was great. Just MHO, but I've never liked the wide whites. Though I'll admit they look good on some cars, you'll never see 'em on any of my rides, ever. I'm just going to stick to blackwalls...

And guys, I'm not attacking those of you who like wide whites. It's your car so run what you want.

Unfortunatly I wasnt around then. But I only roll on bias ply wide whites and nothing else. If I get a pre '63 car that doesnt have them, thats the first thing I do, even if it doesnt run. its got to have bias ply wide whites. My hot rod has chrome reverse wheels with wide white bias plys up front and wide white cheaters out back. Period correct late 50's early 60's. Right out of the little pages....PLUS my hot rod even had wide whites when it was first built in '59

I like both, I bought skinnys for my 57 back in 87 they still sold them
at good year and every one gave me ****. nobody was running white
walls unless they were retired! most people run raised white letter tires!
ive been running skinny whites most the time bias and radials. I remember
all the stock drag cars running skinny whites back in the 60's. but I
like w w w's on old mercs and white wall slicks look super cool!!!
