Rims with oval valve stem holes

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MoparMan4GZUZ, Mar 16, 2009.

  1. My friend bought the rims off my 53 Dodge truck for his and has not been able to find any kind of tubeless valve stem to fit the odd oval shape of the valve stem holes on these rims. has anyone here had that problem and come up with a solution? The hole is almost 3/4 of an inch wide, so the aftermarket 2 piece stems you find at the jobber stores will not work and he does not wish to run tubes. thanks in advance for the solution, I know you guys (or gals) won't fail me. Bud

  2. Weld up the holes and drill new ones.

There is an online site with the stems, I found it doing a search on here, note that the stem run about 5.00 each,I would weld them up and add round holes, But also note you should take your wheels to check if there true, because it would be a shame spending some cash for some stem on a useless wheel. I ended running some ford rims on the dodge, I knew they were nice and straight.

Think about running inner tubes in the rims,if you weld up the hoes, drill new holes ,,think about balancing the wheels too.

Mr. 59, the tires we use were on the dodge were for tubeless use, also the tub stem will sit in funky position as tube stem are made to sit in a round hole not a oval slot hole.
If its a leaking issue painting or powdercoat should take care most of the leak issues.

I found the perfect valve stem for all dodges and Plymouth wheels with the oblong holes. I found a mounted valve stem that is oblong. If anyone is interested in seeing the valve stem, I do have a picture of it. It will help you locate it. I will also tell you where you can find it. Just e mail me and I will send you the e mail. It's a local place that can order them for you. I hope I can help everyone that needs to find this valve stem. I myself was looking for it and it kinda fell right into my hands. I have a 52 Desoto that has oblong holes in the wheels. My concern is....will the wheel hold the air without the tube??? If Nyone can help me with that one. Not sure if the wheels are two piece or one solid piece. Robertlujan71@yahoo.com

    From an old post:

Re: 1954 Plymouth Valve Stem Help!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Found a source...Patchboy.com...
Look under Truck valvestems for 17-501-0v, then the grommet is under "tire valve replacement parts", 17-551. I'd get a stack of the grommets in case they discontinue...
Found them because this thread sent me off on a quest for a simple, old-fashioned screw-on coupler for old style hand tire pump hose to valve stem. Didn't find that. Anyone know a source for those??

  9. From past issues with early Ford tube type rims you might want to check this. Ford wheels are riveted together center to rim. The rivets are not air tight. Also, there is no safety rib on the rim for the tire bead to go over helping keep it on the rim. At around 20 lbs air pressure you could actually loose rim seal in a corner. That's something I don't want to do again. Not all rims should be ran tubeless.

  10. Here is what I'm talking about. Notice no safety rib and rivets. This style rim should dot be ran tubeless unless you have outstanding Luck.

An old thread but you are right Pist-n-broke, a lot of the younger guys have never been around wheels that were tube only before and may not know what to look for. I saw a lot of guys fight that battle in the 60's when they they tried to run tubeless tires without tubes on older rims. Nothing like having your buddy call you for a ride because he woke up to for new the day before but flat tires on his ride because the air leaked out through the rims.

Older post but wanted to update this thread if anyone reads it!

I order 4 of the oval truck stems mentioned above through ezaccessroy which is also the same part from patchboys, these stems "DO NOT" fit the oval hole in my 50's mopar rims, the rubber oval insert lip that goes through the rim is longer oval ,and the height of the insert rubber part that goes through the rim is wider then the thickness of the rim material, i may try and modify these to fit if i cant find something that fits better but wanted to let everyone know these are not a direct fit!

I'm going through the same thing but only with one wheel, I'm curious as to if you found a solution.
