I finally am getting some breathing room to start in on my nomad... just a few more feet of snow to melt off and I should be all set.....

Ok, I have been thinking about taking out the 3 speed and putting in an M-21 Muncy... does anybody advise against this?....

Should I put in a 5 speed? If so, does anyone know what year (exactly) that I would want it out of... a couple of friends think late 80's camero... but I don't know the exact trans that will work with a stock bench seat, and I really don't want to butcher the floors/ ****** mounts, etc...

I would love to know what Hurst shifter (part number etc,. would work best as well...

    thanks

I'd use the muncie.Nothing looks better than the Hurst bench seat shifter in a 55-57.

4 speed is more nostalgic and I am pretty sure Hurst still has the 55-57 bench seat shifters available #3913780 is a Compe***ion Plus.

I prefer a 4 speed. But if you have gears, and cruise it down highway or whatever, may want a 5 speed.

A Muncie would be a piece of cake to install. Since your Nomad already has a 3 speed, there's only a few things that have to be changed. You will need a shifter & linkage, (Hurst Compe***ion Plus is an excellent one), change the drive shaft yoke to a fine spline, (stock drive shaft length is correct for a Muncie), and cut a hole in the floor for the shifter. You may, or may not have to change the clutch disc,(it depends on what Muncie you have). If the Muncie has a co**** spline input shaft, the clutch disc won't have to be changed. That's all there is to it.

A friend called and has a line on an early 4 spd Saginaw... I'm not sure if it is a good way to go... but I am debating about it vs. the M-21... I really don't know the difference between them though

Saginaw is fine as long as you don't beat on it, too much. Takes virtually the same shifter, rods and trans levers may be different. Takes the same yoke a Muncie would, unless you wind up with an M-22. The Saginaws usually have a lower first gear also, check the groove count on the input shaft and report back here to the HAMB to find out what ratio you have. By the way, I'm on my 9th 56 Chevrolet! You can still get the Hurst 4 speed shifter new.I bought mine through O'Reillys Auto Parts.Works great if you still have the bench seat.

Preacher, The Muncie is stronger without question and you can still buy the benchseat shifter. I will be replacing my Mr. Gasket benchseat shifter soon so that will be available if you want. Also whether it's a 4 or 5 speed, 1:1 ratio in high gear would be the same for either unless you get one with O/D. Sorry I didn't get back to you on the 36 but life and **** happens and I can't justify trading the 55. Rich

If you get into the 5 speeds like the eighties camaros then you are gonna have to add a peddle/master combo since they are hydraulic slave like an s10 or a corvette. This is good sometimes because no linkage due to a line you can have made out of steel braided so plenty flexible but no nostalgic value.

I would be more concerned with waiting for all that snow to melt. It was 80 degrees and sunny here today. Oh yeah-go with the 4-speed.

If your Muncie has the speedometer connection on the p***enger side, than the tail shaft has the extra forward mounting holes for a 66 Nova shifter. This moves the shifter away from the seat and gives you more room to move the seat forward if needed. It also gives you more choices for shifter handles. I used one in my '55 with a repro '57 vette shift handle.

Muncie M20 has the lower 1st gear, 2.52 to 1 vs. the M21 that has 2.20 to 1. The really early M20s had 2.52 to 1. I'm pretty sure the Borg Warner Super T10 had something like 2.88 to 1, something to think about for getting off the line and easier on the clutch. I don't know about the shifter options with the T10 though. T10s are available brand new thru Summit for $1519, part # RMG-1304000072. Kinda pricey but look what it costs to get an automatic rebuilt. Hope it works out for you!

I have the Hurst Compe***ion Plus bench seat shifter too, but if I had the room, I'd go for the Super Shifter!

This is before coffee, so take it for what it's worth.

Saginaws are usually a lot cheaper than a Muncie for a reason.
A Muncie 4 speed will basically bolt in where your 3 speed was.
A mid 70's/early 80's Camaro came stock with a Borg Warner Super T-10, which is a little more heavy duty than a Muncie M-20/M-21.
You'll have to change driveshaft yokes to us a Super T-10 in place of your 3 speed.
The Super Shifter sets up higher (bigger hole in the transmission tunnel) than the Compe***ion Plus so that it can use the straight shifter rods for less flex.
I thought the Muncies with the speedo coming out on the p***anger side were Corvette transmissions, but right now I don't know why.

If you're a real man, go a Muncie or settle for a $150 saginaw

    If you're not go a 5 spd

  23. I'd go with a 55-57 O.D. transmission and leave the shift on the column. Just don't go wild speed shifting 'cause the syncro will fail.
