Its a '62 Bird I've got, has anyone put a C6 in behind their 390? I hear that my cast iron cruise-o-matic is not ideal. It is however in decent shape, but since its all apart if a C6 is that much better i might go ahead and do it. Thanks, Eric
all the trans guys i talked to said the cruisomatic is a better trans ..the c-6 is supposed to take more torque. but if its in a cruiser the stock trans will be fine......i am gonna have the one in my wifes 64 t- bird rebuilt next week......i am no trans guy guy but the ones who told me this have been doing this for decades like 30 or 40 years. so i tend to listen ..
The Cruise-O's are pretty good trannys but there are a couple of things you have to watch out for: My ex-wife's 62 Galaxie had a tendency to drop into reverse when it was on a high idle cold with disastrous results. She managed to take out the door on a brand new 69 Olds 442! The other problem is that if you shift the trans into reverse when it is on a high idle and cold, the main case has been known to crack. This condition will be recognized as the trans has only one forward gear and no reverse.Expensive replacement time.
Thanks, doesn't sound too bad then. Anyone know if somebody makes a shift kit for the Cruise-O's? What about torque converters with a little higher stall?
[ QUOTE ] Isn't a Cruis-o same as FMX? [/ QUOTE ] I don't think so, I found one place that does performance rebuilds on Cruise-O's and FMX's are listed seperatly, other than that one place I have found nothing for it performance wise. just looking for something to firm up the shifts and maybe a little looser converter.
