A guy I work with who knows I'm into cars brought in an article about putting pure acitone in your gas and it would help your gas milage and help keep your engine clean. has anyone else heard of this and has anyone tried it? I have a 2001 f150 and thought I might try it.

This old saw gets trotted out every now and then. Hard on any O-rings or other rubber parts, and does little else. Go ahead and try it if you wish, but don't expect much.

I used it to prime engines after sitting all winter and it worked fine for that except it would thin and burn the oil in the cylinders.

It's one thing to throw additives into an old car with a sensor package consisting of oil, gas, & water.

It's a whole nother thing to throw additives into late models with O2 sensors, catalysts, flex fuel sniffers, etc.

    Are you a gamblin man?

Bad idea! Every one of the fuel injectors in your motor are sealed with a rubber O-ring and Acetone hates rubber... If you do more than a little Acetone you are asking for trouble...

There was a show on recently, the two guys that test urban legends, they tested the 300 mpg carb, acetone, hydrogen, ect. There was no increase in mpg or power. Tested both carburetor type and fuel injected engines. Actually lost mileage and power. Tests were done on a dyno with measured amounts of fuel. The FOGGER

Don't put it in your gas tank.

If you have extra acetone laying around I can give you my recipe for homemade......aw, nevermind, wrong forum for that.

Supposedly a 5% mix will remove varnish/sludge from your gas tank. The recommended way was to fill your tank the night before a long trip, then syphon out 5% & repace that much. Supposedly all the mess will desolve & p*** trough your system w/o clogging the filter. where your doing a long distance trip it'll be used up before it affects your rubber parts. Of course the contaminant known as ethanol is in gas & is supposed to degrade rubber also & it is in constant use.

There've been forums around for years dedicated to all sorts of fuel saving ideas and devices.
Folks mix their own '****tails' from Xylene, Toluene, Acetone, 2-cycle oil etc... and swear it gives them better mileage.

In those small amounts you could mix just about any flammable fluid and gasoline without much effect, good or bad.
Fuel additive and snake-oil manufacturers have known this for decades....

I hear 1.8 oz. of 'fresh squeezed Naked Cat Piss' added to every 10 gal. of gasoline gives a noticeable increase in mpg and the motor fires in bossa nova rhythm around 3000 rpm, it's so excited! :p

tolulene and gas by its self (without the mix of everything else) works pretty damn good. on a late model turbo car (VW GTI) timing under boost went from 5 degs to 15 degs at 21 psi boost. I added 1 gallon to 5 gallons 91 and datalogged timing on my scanner before and after so I believe it works. Its mucho pricey though and to get it cheaply requires it to be purchased by the barrell and then you got homeland security watching like your trying to make a bomb.

we used to use av-gas and toulene with a dash of kerosine to mix our fuel for drag racing, worked pretty good, but you could purchase racing fuel for less investment.

Yep, Mythbusters debunked it. The car got about 5 mpg less than with straight gas.

That and you are asking for trouble in a modern car.

Why are we talking about a VW GTI? Want to know what acetone does to seals and orings, soak your finger in it for five minutes and let dry. It will take a weak to put the oil back in your skin. Ethonal is a wonderful cleaner of varnish and anything else for that matter. Also reduces fuel mileage by about 15%.

21lbs of boost on a GTI? I am not boost expert, but that sounds remarkably high for any engine, let alone a piece of moulded aluminum foil in a GTI.
