Im rewiring a 58 Ford p/u,I went to the wrecking yard picked up a headlight switch out of a 80s olds.It has seven wires. Red ,white, green, light blue, brown, black and black with a red or orange stripe. I need to know what wire does what. The white wire looks like dash lights, the big red wire looks like power, black apears to be ground. Thanks.
http://home.earthlink.net/~hilandr451/_uimages/HEADLIGHTSWITCH.jpg this might help, GM keeps the wiring colors pretty similar between models and years. or this http://www.painlessperformance.com/Manuals/80152Instruction.pdf
Go to NAPA and buy a NEW universal headlight switch. Otherwise you'll spend a bunch of time making that thing work, only to have it take a dump on you at 2am.
go to auto zone.get GM switch(Part #SW141)for about 12.00 dollars.then look in a painless or rebel book for complete instructions. If i can do it anybody can.
Thanks for the offer Dave. I went to HF and picked up a mulimeter $3. I figured out what all the wires do. Ill start layin wire tomorow after I clean up the pig tails and clean up the light sockets. I cant beleve how many Hambers live here in the Salinas area. This is great.
My headlights decided to stop working last weekend (at night of course and 45 miles from home). Needed the wiring diagram for my 64 C10 and Revhead posted up exactly what I was looking for. Big thanks! I hope it's just my headlight switch. My parking lights work, instrument panel lights up and dome light works too. But pull the knob all the way out and parking lights shut off and headlights do not turn on. Since the parking lights are shutting off, I figure the switch is not making electrical contact in the full out position? Also thanks to humpie for posting an AutoZone part #. They are just down the street from me.
Also--the OEM switches are generallyof higher quality than parts store ones. If you want to cleanitup...CAREFULLY ory back tabs on case and lift off the plastic terminal plate. Below...from memory...there should be a sliding plastic block with I think two br*** contanct plates, several little springs pressing contact plates up. Not hard unless you are careless and drop something before laying it all out in order on a paper towel... Clean everything in thinner, add grease over the sliding contacts and where things slide in case, re***emble. Good for another 200,000.
I'd be surprised at a headlight switch failure on a factory GM one, I'm sure they happen but I'd think the OEM better than the Autozone $12 made-in-china clone. I mean I've had 40 year old cars the original switch works fine in, so..
