hadda old ford do that to me once.... Then spent 10 years in the NAVY...where they wheel chocked EVERYTHING if they were working on it, or walking away from it.... I hadda moment of inspiration bout 13 years ago and sourced a set of aircraft wheel chocks that were out of standards (they couldnt be repainted due to wear but were perfectly fugly and functional) they made it back to my garage where I been using em ever scince.... Cheap insurance....may not stop everything, but cant hurt
I ran over myself working on my old Bronco a few years ago, but it wasn't running. Crawled underneath (which wasn't difficult to do with a lift and 35" tires) to make some adjustments and my shoulder hit the linkage and took it out of Park. It took off down the driveway while dragging me and folding my neck/head into my chest. Somehow I scrambled out and the truck came to a stop across the street. My kids came around form the back yard and got a neighbor to call 911. I was afraid to move because I was sure my neck was broken...luckily it wasn't. At least I taught my kids well. They were about 4 at the time (twins). When we were waiting for the ambulance to arrive, one of my sons looked down at me and asked why I didn't put "something behind the tires like you always tell us." Since then, I use multiple chocks, redundent jack stands and jacks whenever I get under the car.
I forgot to put my truck in gear once, rolled backward and folded back the drivers door. Makes you wanna cry don't it?
You should make a poster... "when good trucks go bad!" Glad no one was hurt... it still sucks tho'. -W
BUMMER ABOUT YOUR TRUCK.. GLAD NO ONE WAS HURT.. when i was a young lad.. about 14 i did my first motor swap.. 283 / powerglide into a 51 willys station wagon.. got it fired up.. was trying to find a mid-rpm stumble.. standing on the front bumper i was holding the throttle up at about 2 grand when i heard the powerglide whine.. reverse time.. me.. being the brainiac that i am thought... pull the coil wire.. just as i grabbed it.. the car hooked up and jumped backwards face planting me onto the engine.. the coil wire came out of the distributor so i was holding the sparky side.. zapping the shit out of me.. (for some reason i didnt let go) the hood slammed down on my head stuffing me comfortably into the engine compartment for a short ride thru the back of the old wooden garage off a 2 foot drop into the neighbors yard and coming to rest with the left quarter panel in their kitchen.. all happened in like 3 seconds.. .. afterthought.... e-brake (car didnt have one) or wheel chalks at least.
Heard it would have ruined ford to recall all these transmissions to prevent slipping into reverse .Therefore they were only required to issue a warning sticker for the dash!
Sorry to hear about the accident. Gratefully everyone is safe and damage repairable. I had this happen once as well with a ford C4. In a full size van. Running, facing out of the driveway. My dad ran in the house to get something while my Great Gandmother and I waited in the van. Suddenly, jumped into reverse, went through the garage door and partially through the back of the garage. Dad came running out yelling every word I was not supposed to use at that age. He opened the door and my Great Grandmother SMACKS the PISS out of him. In shock, and pissed, he looks at her and says "what was that for?" She responds " How dare you put me and your son in this deathtrap! YOU should be embarrased!!!" Stunned, he simply backs away and shuts the door. Meanwhile, I, at age 13, am cracking up in the back of that van.
There needs to be a safety thread about automatic transmissions. Thank God you and your son are OK. I read all 72 posts. So many close calls. After this lesson the E-brake will be hooked up on my A coupe before the driveshaft is installed. Thanks. Lucky667
Welcome to the C4 and C5 trannies!! Changing shifters will not help at all, it is a hereditary problem that has plagued Ford for years. Mine does the same thing, I have had that transmission apart God knows how many times trying to fix just that. The only thing that I can tell you is that after all the times trying to fix it when I put it in park when I was going forward it will not jump out. If I was going from reverse to park then it will still have a tendency to do it but if your are still in a slight motion when you put it in park it will lock. Here is a stupid question though, does the dipstick come out of the case or pan? Most of the issues hapens with the ones that had the dipstick out of the pan.
That sucks. Let me know if you are on the lookout for parts- seems to be a pretty good amount of them out here.
Thats why they have parking brakes!!!!.NOT EMERGENCY BRAKE.In the rest of the world it is called a Parking brake and it is part of the driving test that you have to apply it every time you park the car.I have never understood why america call,s it a emergency brake.Even in automatics you set it every time you park.Lazy americans lol
When I was in high school Rode with my buddy down into the city. . He wanted to take guitar lessons. . so me and Dave were sitting outside nosing around the businesses.. We are like 16.. WE look over. . There goes Toms truck rolling down a 4 lane one way street backwards.. We cant get into it. cause the doors are locked. .Its an S10 pickup but we can barely slow it down.. it rolls about 2 blocks down hill.. jumps over the curb and stops about 1 foot before going through a huge Glass Corner window of a store. Boy were we lucky... Always use that e Brake aaron
