SO...I tore apart my 21 stud flathead from my ford three speed with my budget and timeframe set for my t5 upgrade this week! I call speedway to get the adapter plate that they advertise; the same as offys but for a hundred buck less! The cust. serv. rep says"oh, wait, that part is being flagged as warning...further research is necessary to mount s-10 t5 ******s".... What the f? is this the exact part that offenhauser ( and others) offer? Do i have to break the bank for this plate and what other issues need to be further "researched"? The way i was shooting for was to use my stock ford pivot arm and throwout bearing...I thought i had done the right research and read all the threads on here ten times each, sorry for another t5 thread but if i wasnt so tough i might start to cry!
If you want the offy engineering, you should buy the offy piece instead of expecting knockoffs to be the same
Cornhusker Rod and Custom has one of the best most complete and proven kits out there. A little more dollars, but it works. 402-749-1932
I did mine with the machined aluminum adapter plate. My '49 flattie has the two piece "truck" bellhousing (not like the earlier blocks with part of the "bell housing" cast onto the back of the block) and the adapter plate bolts right up. I'm running the Ford flywheel, clutch pressure plate, controll fork, linkage and a newer stepped br*** pilot bushing. Using a new Astro van clutch disk as it fits to the T-5 splines but had to machine out the perimeter of the center depression in the flywheel about 1/2 to clear the rivets on the Astro disc. So far - so good. But we don't have the little buggy on the road yet so we will see.....................
I talked to Gene at Flat-O, great conversation, and he said that he doesnt produce the plate that uses the ford throwout arm because it really doesnt go back together "perfect". Speedways only comment was "we dont have that information infront of us at this time"....I dont mind t******* but if this thing is gonna f up on the highway, i dont know...thanks for the help guys keep the convo going, please!
Well i can put it back together in a few minutes, thats not the issue, i was hoping to see if anyone has had a problem with their adapter that was sold as a bolt-up part and also posting this as a hopeful warning for anyone doing the same job as well. If i already had the parts to do the job i would have been out 400 bucks due to false advertising!
Does Cornhuskers have a set up for using the ford pivot arm and not the gm with hydro clutch?...I looked earlier and ***umed they only made the gm throwout ***em.
Its not gonna f up on the highway, but at a stop sign or light in 5 o'clock traffic stuck in neutral! TP There are too many stories of speedway copying parts from small companies. Do the right thing.
I have used both the speedway kit with stock clutch arm behind my 50 model trucks flathead and the cornhusker kit with the hydraulic clutch in my 35 sedan with the stock 35 flathead. If I were to do it again I would use cornhuskers adapter hooked up to the stock clutch arm. I had my transmission out of the 50 at least three times to grind the inside lip a little at a time to clear the flywheel. The only modifications we had to make on the cornhusker kit was trim the adapter a little to clear the starter.
Just got off the phone with Gary at cornhuskers...looks like i will be saving my pennies and cashing in the bottles and cans and going with his kit. Thanks to all of your advice guys, and please get the word out about speedways "further research" problems!
There is alternative to either of these kits. It requires a little more leg work but uses more stock parts and seems to ***emble a little easier. This kit is similar to the #8 post. The key to this conversion is that you must hunt down the front case from a 37-48 Ford 2 piece 4 speed truck transmission, swap meet or auction bid. By unbolting the front portion of the used truck ****** and combining with an aluminum adapter this makes a simple conversion. It uses the stock Ford throw out bearing as the new kit does not require a sleeve to be pressed on the input shaft. The stock ford input collar bolts right on and has a provision for the return spring. An added plus is that I now have a 9" or 10" clutch disk made especially for stock ford pressure plates so you don't have to use the Astro van disc and modify it, you just have to know the input spline count..here is a picture of the parts.
26T, Were you able to find the aluminum adapter? I have searched Spadaro's web site with no luck. This seems to be the long pole in the tent. I have a '49 M47 Merc truck with a 239. My Nephew gave me an '89 Mustang T5 (I'll change the tailshaft) and I found the "hogshead" bell. My goal is to utiliize the stock linkage. ***istance from anyone will be appreciated.
