The wife and I were picking up dinner and I saw some hot rods in the parking lot- a sedan delivery, couple of 32's, couple of vettes. So we go in and its pretty obvious that the table full of guys wearing car shirts is the group with the cars. I've been out of the car scene for a while now since I've just been building my car in the garage and not out driving and showing it. So anyways I struck up a conversation and next thing I know the guys are all coming to my house to see my car. I guess the point of this post is that age doesn't matter to a bunch of guys that love cars. I have more car friends that are over 50 than guys that are my age and I'm 26. Sorry for the rambling, just excited to make some new car friends.
I think I saw your ride at the goodguys show a few months back. It was probably my favorite car there. It used to be a 4 door right? You had a ton of metal work going and it just had a very raw and visceral look to it. I dig that.
The lesson learned is never close yourself off from someone not your age!(either older or younger) I'm an old fart, but speak CARS and enjoy talking about them to anyone that shows the same interest. That is one of the great things about the HAMB, now we get to share common interests globally.......thanks for sharing your discovery!
I'll tell you I have a lot of hobbies and you are absolutely right. It's disgusting the amount of ****iness and ego in offroad racing - to the point that I hardly use my long-travel tacoma for anything but driving to work. Mountain biking is a little better, but there are still the guys who think they own the trail and are better and faster than anyone else. I went to the sprint car races last weekend and there was a brawl ON THE TRACK. Hot rodders are a breed of their own. I can go anywhere and start talking cars and make a friend.
That was me, come say hi if I'm around the car next time. Build thread here if you haven't seen it: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272171&highlight=kaiser
95% of my car friends are 50+ years old. Most of them are old racers that were my heros as a kid. They all quit racing and finished their hot rods. They have a museums of racing and hot rod history in their garages. I am VERY lucky to live in this area, where there is such a history of racing. Glad to see that you met up with some older hot rodders... Listen to every word they say. Later, Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
there are usually about 12-14 guys in that group. We all live in this same area that you do. I didnt go tonight because I am in the middle of replacing my wheel studs. They are all old enough to be our dads....but they dont act any different because of their age.
Another older car friend of mine is a local guy named Rick Stewart who has been building sprint cars and hot rods since well before I was born. It's amazing to talk to him and learn all he has to offer, and very cool that we can see eye to eye about something. The first time we met he told me how cool it was to him to see a kid building old cars, it was refreshing to him to see some interest from my generation.
I know exactly what you mean. Most of my buds enjoy it, only to the extent that they like looking at them. All my "car friends" are my dad's friends. It's cool though, because they have all the knowledge and know-how and they've been a tremendous help.
That's totally true too - my friends like cars like mine but they aren't out building them either. I have to drag them to shows with me.
Hi Keith I am one of those guys that you met tonight .After we left your house we were all talking about you at Dairy Queen and how cool your car was. We all think that you should join our group on Wednesday night also Glen who responded to you on the above reply is part of our group bunch of good guys. Your car is way cool cant wait to see it all done. Dont forget to call me tomorrow evening and see my project. Take care Frenchy ( Doc Detail )
