Lefthand/Righthand Dodge Bolts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sandmountainslim, Mar 25, 2009.

  1. What years did the Chrysler Corp. use the funky Left hand turn/right hand turn lug bolts on their vehicles?
Was this something that began in Dodge Bros times or was it something cooked up later?
It sure has caused alot of broken bolts!

Don't know what years they used them but I have a '53 windsor with 'em and my buddy has a '68 Fury with 'em also. So there's 15 years. I would be interested to know this one

They where used up untill the late 1960's at least, my dads 67 Barracuda has right and left hand threaded lug nuts, and both of the other A body barracudas we have had have been the same. Internationals also used them into the mid-late 1960's

  6. 1963 Valiant Wagons had em.....Don't ask how we found out...

My buddy had a 63 valiant and one day we are out and he gets a flat. So I say no problem I'll have it changed in a few minutes. Ya rite. We were all smoked up and I'm taking off the nuts and I twist one off, fuck, I twist off another one what the fuck, then I twist off the third one and I'm like no way! So I look at the end of the stud and it has a "L" {just like the one on my forehead} so I turn it the other way and it comes rite off. So we limped home on 2 studs. It's funny, when I was 16 I was sure I knew it all. JC

You guys ever have a wheel fall off a Dorf or Chevy? Always on the left side! The "backwards" threads on Chrysler, Stude, and IHC tighten themselves as the wheel turns! They knew that back in the '30's, for cryin' out loud! The legislators, in their lofty towers of wisdom, legislated that they be discontinued in the '70's.

My Dodge DA coupe(1929-30) has the left handed threads. This was so lug nuts would not loosen on the left side if they were not tightened properly.
My earlier Chryslers also have left handed nuts for the wheel bearings .

This post is making me smile.

Over 30 plus years ago as a young 14 year old with my very first vehicle (55 F-100), I bought new lug nuts for my new Cragar wheels.

Even back then, many of the auto parts store guys were idiots. The guys at "Guarantee Auto" sold me a set of chrome Dodge lug nuts, but I didn't know it at the time.

Back home, I kept trying different lugs and some would work and others wouldn't. Took me a little while to figure out that 10 were good and 10 were bad...

...and it wasn't funny at the time!

I was a passenger in a ford van and we lost the right front wheel, we were going around 75mph. It was not fun.
It really doesent make since to have a left hand thread on a stud. On the center of a wheel, yes. But on a stud, nothing is turning the stud to make it come loose. Think about it. Thats why they dont do left hand threads anymore, because its stupid. It doesent cost any more or less to have them rh thread, or lh thread. So its not about $$$.

  20. Way back when, I used to sell a lot of RIGHT hand thread mopar wheel studs and nuts to a LOT of pissed off mopar owners. Usually in sets of ten! "F*&^K them damned things! I'm gonna turn this thing into a "normal" car!" Heard that many, many times. L.O.L.

the one i have now has the left hand studs still on it..I see no point in changing them, I know they are there
why I did it to the other charger?..I have no clue..

Stopped in early 70s, started early. Posters here mentioned late 20s, so look before cranking! MAny have been converted, but there are a lot still out there. Watch both sides too. Quite often an owner or shop will install a used LF disc or drum on the RF. Watch out for the big truck drums in the rear too!

Helped a buddy retrieve a 59 Caddy and it had left on one side right on the other. I also found a 59/60 Buick once that had left and right spindle nuts. That was the only reason I got that brake drum. Someone had taken the one on other side and taken the dust cover off the drivers side. When the nut wouldn't loosen he gave up. I came along and had sense enough to try it the other way and voila off it came

Everyone I ever had, ha a big ole L on the bolt head or stud.

  29. '37 Hudson Terraplane had LH lug bolts on driver's side. Lug bolts, not nuts. It had a couple of pins that fit into the small holes between the lug bolt holes on the wheel in order to locate the wheel so bolt holes would line up, then the lug bolts screwed into threads on the rear axle flange and front hub.
