The Day of the Drags is do-it-yourself drag racing. Want a certain type of event? Step up and organise it! Kicking off in 2006 with 40 cars and a handful of second drivers it has grown to 80 entrants in 2009 with 65 cars (including several from interstate). Conceptualised by Joseph Rodriquez (QQMOON) as a back in the day drag racing event, it caters for pre-71 cars with a preference for pre-49 hot rods, HA/GR (HAMBsters) racers and other cars that might have been seen at Castlereagh.

A few out of scope cars compete, the DOTD organisers choosing to grandfather in those valued early supporters of the event. DOTD09 saw HAMBsters, hot rods, cl***ics and muscle cars competing in 3 formats over the day.

The morning sessions consisted of all entrants racing heads up, shooting for the best reaction time and a custom trophy donated by Tony Martin of Road Runner Models. Michael Wells took the honours with a reaction time of 0.004. With unlimited runs and no brackets to worry about the entrants could run as many times as they could. Many entrants getting up to or over 20 runs!

An early disappointment was in store for Richard Cartisano. After a spectacular wheel lifting, car twisting launch the Nostalgia Dreaming wagon threw its tailshaft at the quick end of the track smashing everything it could and dropping a considerable amount of oil. Charlie Falzon too was out early, with the big old Olds losing water it was back to the pits after just one p***.

It wasnt tears for all though, both Shane Corr in his Plymouth Cranbrook and Troy Fewings in his FX Holden giving us a trip down nostalgia lane with a few half track smoky p***es. Dean Hodges 1957 Beetle was also a surprising treat. Dean gave the keys to Ryan Heymans who proceeded to impressively smoke the tyres and more than a few V8s with consistent mid 13 second p***es. Nine HAMBSters graced the entrants list, 4 of them being driven again by the ladies. Mary-Ann Mastromauro even taking the Candy Express to a 14.2, suggesting Nicks time in the car might soon be permanently handed over?

After lunch it was on to Dial Your Own eliminations. Shannons Insurance once again provided a $500 insurance policy to the winner, and following the tradition of previous years, a bucket of gold coins was presented to the runner up. The bucket of coins coming from $2 tossed in from each entrant during the drivers briefing. Between rounds, there was more opportunity for entrants to continue with grudge racing taking place for those already eliminated.

Of the top 3 qualifiers, Lenny Hoskins and Shayne Ide made it into the semis. Lenny Hoskins taking the win over Patrick McMullens 308 powered EH Ute, and Debbie Rodriquez in the HAMBster crossing the line ahead of Shayne Ides wild 13.6 second ride. Shayne did a marvellous job of keeping the car off the wall after transmission oil sprayed and let those big slicks break traction.

The final saw the Lenny Hoskins HR Ute, with an 11.2 dial in, chase down Debbie Rodriquez 16.0 second dial in. Debbie beat Lennys light (0.106 to 0.170) and crossed the line ahead of him, unfortunately breaking out at 15.994 and giving Lenny the win with 11.513.

As the day is as much about fun and good spirited skids, not all the awards were for performance - Paul Contos picked up Drewfus Choice for his flathead powered 28 Ford Roadster as best representing the spirit of the day and Karen Van Ryn took home the Starters Choice.
