Here the deal. I stripped a couple teeth on my Tailgate window regulator on my 59 chevy wagon. A couple were gone when I got it and Then one by one they've been failing leaving me with 1 inch of dead space with no rear window. Anyone rebuild these? I can't seem to find a replacement and I'm currently garageless. Found one in Gilroy CA but the guy doesn't want to ship it. Found one in South Dakota but the guy can't find time to pull it. I've got it taped up but I just finished the interior and the weather sucks right now and I don't want to lose all my hard work any ideas? I'd be willing to give someone a few bucks to pick the one up in Gilroy if they had some spare time. It would be a pita as they'd have to inspect the part, pay for it, and then ship it. I can paypal today if someone could pick up the part. I guess I'm desperate. Looks like 5 teeth missing total.
I just bought a 59 wagon, but its going to be a while before it arrives from the other side of Washington. I has a bunch of extra parts. I am also going to look at a tail gate soon. If I end up with an extra gate I will make you a deal on a regulator...providing you have not found one by then!
It might be a long shot but try other GM wagon rear window regulators. They seem to carry over for a few years. I put an 85 electric motor in a 60 rear window regulator and it bolted right up like it was made for it.
Heres a picture...needs a bit of work! Last time it was lic. was 1964. I believe a 1960 tailgate uses the same regulator...posisbly even later wagons as they used the same outside crank handle. My 62 belair wagon had the same type of handle on the outside, but I never pulled it apart to know if the regulator is the same.
I'm sure 60 is the same. You sure thats a sixty in the picture it has 59 tail lights. Please let me know when yours arrives if you have an extra and I'll let you know if I've found one. Thanks so much for your help. Thats why the HAMB has such a good name.
Did yours have an electric rear window before or did you convert it? I'd be interested in the conversions if you did.
No , it was a manual crank and the crank had scarred up the tailgate so I wanted to eliminate the crank and smooth the gate. Like I said the motor from the 85 Caprice wagon that I used as a donor car basically bolted right in . It meshed with the 60 gears like it was made for it. The gears on the 85 regulator worked the mechanism slightly different ,but I think you could scavenge the gear and graft it in place of your stripped 59 gear.
I've got a 59 Brookwood (2 dr) wagonI just bought in a wrecking yard, they've got a 4dr there too, I'll try to stop by and see if the mechanism is still there. And a question: the 4 dr had a 1 piece rear bumper on it, as opposed to the three piece one that was on the Brookwood. What's the deal with the one piece (is that the "California" bumper) ? I did buy the bumper.
I can pick up the one in Gilroy for you....pm me w/the info....its about fourty five minutes away from me.....
