Hi gang, I bought this 48 dodge truck...why I don't know, it was a good deal. WTH can I do with it? It has the spitfire six and runs like a top, PTO and two spd axle. You guys always have neat ideas, Thanks. Lippy
WOW, short wheelbase like a wrecker, small dump truck or trailer hauler. Looks like a great candidate to be used as a shop truck or swap meet rig with a stake bed and a short sleeper behind the cab.
Yeah, it's a ton and a half. About 130 in WB. The body is real good. Just would like to put something really cool and different on the back, Only thing I ever saw were, wrecker, fuel tanks, dump bed or flatbed. ???? They use to pull a cattle trailer with it.
I'd shorten the frame up a little more and build a pickup bed for it. Or maybe leave the frame alone and build a nice wood bed. Then drive the wheels off of that bomb. Wouldn't do anything else. Looks like super fun just like it sits. Great rig!!!
jeez, I wish the body on mine was that nice when I got it! Cool find. I would find a wrecker body for it and drive it until 50 mph is not enough. Then comes the big block and better brakes all around.
Bob, you just gave me an idea! How about a 48 or so dodge p.u. box and some wide flat fenders to cover the duals!

That truck is just plain neat.... What if you took an old aluminum body airstream trailer of similar vintage and ch***is mounted it on the truck. Like a Cl*** C motorhome. It would make for a cool tow rig.
Heres one Jim Carter has on his site its a 1946 chevrolet 1 1/2 ton pickup. You could do the same with the DODGE. http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cgi/htmlos.exe/004483.16.529781487400028166
You guys are coming up with some cool ideas. I would really like something old looking that wouldn't look out of place on the old truck. The wrecker deal would be simple to build. It's like AJ said, the truck is old enough, your not gonna drive it too far. If I found an airstream trailer I couldn't cut it up!! LOL. I wish I could find an old gas tanker trailer, I'd put a fifth wheel plate on it and paint it all up like an aviation tanker.
I kinda like the "oversized pick-up" look. Build the bed so it looks as close to stock as possible, maybe section some rear fenders to fit the dualies, like an old Dodge pick-up on steroids...then mount the 75mm ATG in the back...
I think it looks cool as is. I think if it was mine, I might paint it glossy dark green with a white grill, and put a nice wood flat bed on it, and just drive it a lot and have fun with it. Or maybe look for an old tow truck that's been totalled up front and put the bed of the tow truck on it. I like it all jacked up like that. With that shape of that cab, it might look kind of boxy if you tried to turn it into some kind of rod by lowering it. Might as well leave it looking like a real truck and have fun with it. Old trucks are a blast to drive around in.
Yeah, but I got it mounted on the p***enger side of my Mercury. For the occasional Hummer or SUV that gets out of line. It fires thru the hood ala B-25H Bomber
I saw a really nice 49 Ford pick up at BTT 50's a few years ago. It had a really well done wooden camper that looked like an old hillbilly's cabin. Like something out of Lil Abner. It was pretty cool. Wood shingles. Peaked roof. The whole 9 yards. Maybe a larger version of something like than would work on your flatbed. A north woods Tiki Hut.
Yeah, I'd do a pickup bed too. The idea about the Cl*** C motor home didn't sound too bad either 'cept I wouldn't want anything over the cab. A long bed pickup bed would probably fit. You could put a slide in camper in that too, 'cept those damn things are gettin' expensive as hell now days.
Oversized pickups look good (keep it in proportion)-just put the axles above the springs and keep the 20's on it.
Look at some German WW 2 trucks and half tracks. They had all kinds of stuff on the back. The Brits did too. The American not as much. The Germans even had a coal fired steam truck
Go to the junkyard and get a ***mins diesel out of a wrecked Dodge pickup. Throw a ****load of speed parts at it, leave the rest as is, and do wicked dual wheel burnouts with it. Oh, and don't forget the stacks that shoot flames. That thing looks like a ton of fun to me, nice find.
