you need to have bare metal on both sides because......
1- the paint will get real funky under that much pressure.
2- you take a chance of messing up the die finish.
3- have you ever tried to sand around louvers.
4- have you ever tried to sand old funky paint off of louvers.
5- i had a guy bring me a new hood side just made by his "bodyman". it fit his 33 ford so it was a simple flat piece just had primer on it, so it did not rust. took the primer off, and found 3/4" of bondo on it:eek:. so you never know what is under the paint.

    as well as ...

You really want to see what you have under there and it'll ruin any paint anyway. , and for me I use Chem Dye to lay it out, doesn't work on paint.

I've had them where it was a solid 1/2" of skim across the whole thing...

  11. $1.50 per, no set up charge, bare metal. And I'll fire it up for one or a hundred.

Thanks folks, that gives me a good idea of what is going on.

Back when I had mine done I lucked out because I had sent the hood to Tacoma with my dad to have it metal stripped and when he told the stripper that I wanted to have it louvered and the stripper called the gent in Bremerton to make sure he was at the shop before sending Dad over with the hood in the trunk of his 75 Olds Delta 88 coupe.

The prices are pretty close to what I figured they would be and way less than what he thought the going price was.

The guy that does ours gets $1.00/louver. Same price for almost 20 years I've been going to him. Must be bare metal both sides.

I charge $2 per for 3" and 4" plus layout or any other work needed. It isn't any big money maker. I can also make tooling for virtually any shape or length of louver for my Pullmax. Photos in my album show 2 hoods with 3" louvers and a shot of my Pullmax forming louvers. JW

I use Louvers Unlimited in Upstate NY (Craryville) Pete Schmid (on right) does excellent work and he charges $2.25 / louver and $40 setup Same deal as others- paint and rust must be stripped from lovuver area. He does the louvers for Rolling Bones Hot Rods

A clear definition of being ignorant simply means you didn't know. Being ignorant isn't a bad thing, and if your seeking knowledge one one can fault such a behavior or at***iude. What will get you though is being stupid. The only thing that tops that is knowing better and doing something stupid anyway.
