Ok so not much of an update. I was hooking up the cross steer the other day and it was pretty warm out , somewhere around 68 . So i get the steering done and im thinkin " i oughta try to paint the column today while its warm and i have the time . So i run to the big box store and find a couple cans of krylon " banner red" grab some spray can clear and primer and head home . As im putting on about the 5th coat of rattle klear on the column i think " hey , this dont look to bad. So i hand my son a sheet of 180 grit and put him to work on the dash . The car isnt meant to be a show piece. Its just my dream of what a 55 chevy should be , straight axle , radiused wells , gl*** tilt nose , bbc and fender well headers . I wanted the exterior to be satting black , but the interior i want just bright ***y red . So i gave it a whirl and i gotta say , i personally think it turned out great, esp for a rattle can . Sorry some of my pics are blury , its all i got , stupid thing blurs when i try pics without flash . Dig that *****en flake wheel , not a repop . Found half of it sticking out of a field behind the neighbors house. gave it a tug and found the other half burried ha ha ha , cleaned up all right.
SURE!!!!!!!!!! Ill swing over and pick it up this weekend. But im gonna have to bring it back to IL with me , You know , rattle cans require months of prep work . I should have it back to you by ohhhhh say october. and dont worry , i wont let her sit idle , ill be sure and give it plenty of excersize lol
Very cool rattle can job....nice bright color and goes well with your spoke wheel.....I painted mine a good many years ago with rustoleum gloss black....a step up from **** green!
I was thinking about doing the dash on my truck in rattle can but was worried about the out come. Hell I know what I am doing tommorow. thanks for the post. Awsome job by the way looks slick.
What kind of clear did you use? I had a bad experiance with spray can clear once I cant remember what brand.
FWIW the PO painted the dash on my car with rattle can HOK from wal mart...now a couple years later it's all cracked and has to come off...of course compared to the rest of the prep work I have to do it's the least of my problems...just throwing it out there, that dash does look great!
Everything i used was krylon. Put 3 coats of primer on it and let it sit . then once it was completely dry i started with the color , light coats for the first 2 then started spraying a little heavier . I think i put on probably 6 or 7 coats of color and then probably 7 or 8 coats of clear. The clear was krylon also , they have a matte clear and a crystal clear gloss , so i used the crystal gloss. i noticed the trick to the clear was if you held it back to far no matter how much you applied it would be fuzzy and not very shiny at all , so as i got into the later coats i started holding it closer . When i sprayed i would make sure it looked slick and wet on the last few coats , It looked like it was ready to run but i got lucky and it never did . i little advice tho . after stacking that many coats of rattle can stuff , shut the doors , roll up the windows and walk away , dont get excited like i did on the first time of my column and rub it . I slid all the paint on the column the next day and had to redo it . let it sit for a day or so before messing with it.
Looks good from here.... Also good to hear you have a (willing?) helper. And.... you can just tell people the blurry pic is because of the lopey cam. Nice car Howard
