A friend of mine wanted a SBC, so I traded him one I had for a Caddy 390 he had. Now I don't know what to do with it. Put it in my '59 Chevy Pickup, '54 Plymouth (against the law somewhere I am sure), just wait to build an A when I can find a decent body or just make garage art out of it. It has a lot of great parts on it.
He has a lot of parts, he just wanted the small block and needed to get the Caddy motor out of the shop. I fell good about the trade because he ended up putting the SBC in a '50 Ford Panel that a HAMBer bought for him and his son.
congratulations, not only did you get hold of a sweet deal on the engine, the transmission looks like the very desirable 1-year-only dual-range hydra-matic. in 1955 Cadillac and Pontiac changed the internal gear ratios,1st was lower for better off-the-line performance, which also brought the ratio for the 2nd-3rd change closer, making that shift less abrupt.
How would I be able to tell if its that ****** or not? Any numbers or distinctive markings to tell what it is? Would anybody be able to tell me what year this motor is? I can take more pics and/or look for casting numbers.
Hmmm 390 Cad in a '59 Chevy truck...That sounds totally sweet. I would venture to say that it would be way cooler in the truck than in an A... Good score there.
If it is in fact a 390 they came out in '59. The trans in the picture is the old side pan hydro which was used up until '55. Maybe you have an earlier Caddy engine(331-365) or someone along the line added the earlier trans to the later engine. Maybe a Caddy expert could chime in with some serial number locations for you to determine exactly what you have.
I say keep it - that's some good tradin' material right there! Hell, you could trade into a Hemi! ~Jason
Hell put it in any thing! There way to cool for floor decorations. What ever you put it in take the hood off. It needs to be seen for millions of thumbs up as you cruise the roads.
Hell you can put it in my car I'll let you ride in it HaHAHHAAAAA Cool find and a grate trade I'd pu*** in the truck
Any Caddy gurus want to chime in on this with some id locations and numbers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a wonderful reminder of a swap that I helped my brother-in-law with back around '67..a 390 Cad into his 55 Chev snb. Man, that thing hauled ***...my sister made him sell when she found out just how bad it really was... RIP Richard. .
