My 53 chevy build

    Well I think it may be about that time for me start a thread about my little project that I picked up. I bought this last June after hearing about it threw a friend of mine while out at the bar one night. I think he intially was going to use it as a parts car for one that he was restoring for his grandpa, but decided to pass on it.

    It had the 216 in it when I brought it home, ran like a top. However it leaked oil like a siv. While I was on spring break last week, Bugman, myself and another friend of mine dropped a 235 in it. I'll show some pics of that later. Hopefully when I go home for my easter break I'll be her dropping some to get a better stance on her. Not a lot. but about as low as it will go with the torque tube still under her.

    I'm looking for a new radiator for her, so if you guys no of anyone in the Wisconsin area that may have one I would be obliged to get in contact with them.

    This is day we loaded her up to bring her home.

    Drove it up on the tailer under her own power. We got it home and started put in back together to get it ready for the little show that my home town puts on durring the Fourth of July.

    This is the most recent pic I have of it at the moment, and it's not the best but you get the idea of what it looks like. This was taken in October during Stout's homecoming parade.

    Hey congrats! Is that smoke coming out from the top radiator hose?

    Mild custom.....Lower it, shave it, clean up the body some. It's got some patch panals that need to be finished. Haven't decided on paint yet but the chicks dig the bare steel :) so I'm gonna run that for a while yet.

    Yes that is smoke coming out of the top hose.....

    Well I recently performed an engine transplant on my 53. The motor that came out was the original 216 that it came with. I wanted to keep a straight six in it for sure. You just can't beat the note that straight six will produce with split exhaust and some glass packs. The car that actually got me hooked on the sound is rickycoyote's bamboo bitch.

    Anyway I spent my spring break swapping motors and I could not have done it without the help of my friends, especially Tanko. So thanks guys for all the help.

    The new motor is a '62 235 that I bought off of 37RAT here on the hamb. The motor fit well just required a few modifications to the motor mounts as well as I need to modify the water pump shaft from the new motor to fit behind the radiator.

    This was a great learning experience. This was hands down the most work I've done a car myself, but like I said I could have done it without the help of my friends.

    Some of you 50's chevy guys may have noticed that I attempted to put the motor in the car without the trany attached. I was waiting on a clutch to come from Napa and I decided I wanted to set the motor in the car so I could feel like I accomplished something. I had read that you are not suppose to put the motor and trany in separate but the shop manual I had said it could be done. Two hours later the next night with still no trany in the car I had to remove the passenger side motor mount and move the motor forward to reunite the two. But hey, now I know for sure.

    Yea that two hours later you speak of was like 3:30am haha!

    I figure I'd make my first initial post on the HAMB on here since your car is in my garage right now Hot Rod, haha! As an update to everyone else, I am the other guy that helped Hot Rod Pat swap the motor. The saturday we got the motor started in the car for the first time we didn't go to be Friday night, that was pretty fun... as long as it doesn't happen again too soon haha. BTW Hot Rod, since I haven't talked to you today, Bugman and me got the radiator hose, thermostat, battery cables, and a little elbow grease the last couple days... purrrrrs like a kitten :) or a deer ;)

    Welcome aboard. I like to hear that shes purring now. You have no idea how thankful I am that you guys are working on this in my absence. Now its time for you to post about your little project that you picked up but never offcially told me you got. Can't wait to drive it in a couple weeks.....

    I don't remember the last time I was up 38 straight hours. That was...um...fun...I think?? I think we got the radiator hose situation sorted out so she should be all set now.

    You need a yellow air cleaner to match that John Deere green paint job.

    53olds, your right, look at that they do look about the same. Strange, they must have seperated at birth.....

    Now the color on the other hand came under much debate while working on it. Bugman, NailDriver and myself decided that it's more of an Oliver green as opposed to a John Deer green. But I know what you mean.....

    Thanks 53olds for the idea. My buddy used that on his daily driver, a 95 trans am, and it looks menacing. I'm gonna rock the bare metel for awhile, and when I do get round to painting it I'm feeling a brighter paint scheme, something with some flake and what not. But again, thanks for the idea.

    Ya know, I looked in that one for a bit too! I'm a bit disappointed that it didn't make it in that pic LOL.

    So Bugman and I took the bare beast out for a spin today to check out the new thermostat and radiator hose. No more getting hot and no more leaky, YAY! We adjusted your rockers a bit today to tone down the ticking, it helped a bunch. We figure on actually measuring the lash in the next couple days. I found out that your vacuum advance doesn't hold a vacuum so the diafram probably has a hole in it. The one off the 235 is good but at the wrong angle and you can't adjust that. I'm going to check bumper to bumper tommorow when I look for a carb kit for the Buick. That's the latest for now.

    Haha, oh yea.... and we put all the extra parts from the swap (besides the motor) in the trunk for ya! Now we don't need the lowering blocks :D. jk... kinda.

    Im starting to think that our car show is gonna have an all 50's section! Sad thing is, they will be the only real classic cars from our club.....

    Hahahaha, thanks guys. Once I get a tool box for the back too I'm sure I wont need the lowering blocks anymore :D.

    I think your right yule, but thats ok with me. We should get all crabby and not let other cars park by us cause it would ruin our image.... I'll stop over later to see your design.

So after the motor swap Bugman and I were helping Pat get the car ready to take up to the Stout Auto Show. Everything seemed to be in “Prime” condition to take up there on the 200 mile trek. The only thing that was iffy sounding was the generator… it had kind of a slight noise to it. We kept oiling it and soon the noise “faded” to be a background noise… oops. Well Pat made the trip up and everything was fine, no problems! Cruised about 55-60 great. He even won a trophy at the show, I’ll let him post a pic of it and explain.

    So this is where the story kind of gets interesting… Myself, Bugman, and Hawkeye decide to go up to the show in my Trans Am. Make it up there and have a little too much fun with my TA and blew up the rear end… oops. So now we need a car to go back home in so we can make it to work. Pat was kind enough to let us use the ’53. He needed his other (normal) car for something or another so we got the ’53… not a problem, really, there were just a couple things that made the trip difficult:

    So… Dark, rainy, no defrost, no windshield wipers, some of us might have been under the weather, cough cough not going to name any names, cough.

    Our fixes were: RainEx the windshield while it was raining, use our squeegee on the inside of the windshield every minute or two to relieve the fog, and to go fast enough to get the rain to bead up and exit the windshield :D

    So we ended up not dyeing and actually making good time too! We go home parked the car. I drove it like 20 more miles after getting home and the generator locked up and broke the belt! Turns out that noise we were hearing was the cage in the front bearing breaking up and getting stuck in the bearing! WOW are we glad that didn’t happen on the way home!
    But now that I’ve gotten through the long story, yesterday we got the generator back together and on the car with a new belt and she purrs like a little kitten again :). Fun times.
