Projects Unorthodox Plymouth chop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Spanish Fly, Nov 8, 2008.

  1. I was going to comment that it needed a visor and some 14" wires, guess you thought so too. That looks GREAT!

Great job on the chop. The 42-48 Plymouths are my favorite nothing cars, comfortable, roomy, ride well, cheap, easy to work on and good looking.

My only OUCH is that visor. and perhaps the spots as well. Might could live with the spots but the visor just kills the car for me.

Agreed. I dig the car but it would look even better w/o the visor and with a period-correct wheel/tire combo...

Super! Man that's a lot of work, but it certainly looks like it was worth the effort. Those widened rear fenders will have 'em scratchin' their goards! The '41, and '46-'48 Plymouths have always had great eye appeal to me and I would really love to have another one someday. Thanks for the pix...made my day.:)

Another short update. Ok, I've always loved the style of a Lincoln Zephyr rear fender, and being my fenders were somewhat boring, I decided to make new fenders for the rear of the Plymouth.I ditched the widening as seen earlier. Here is a quick picture of what I have so far, I have some pics I'll try to get on tonight. We built the frame out of 1/4" rod, We made it in several pieces due to the fact we didn't have an E-wheel, and the family was sleeping so we couldn't use the planishing hammer.

  13. Nice job! I'm really interested in your approach on the fenders. I've never liked the stock rears on my 48 coupe.

You lost me with the fender. I like the widened version of the stocker, the new one looks, well, it looks like it doesn't match the work you've done so far, a great chop and style on a challenging body style. Maybe when it's done it'll be OK, keep the photos coming.

Not meaning to insult the work, it just doesn't look right...yet...

Cool build. Great chop, looks like a tough style to chop the top on but you did a nice job.

My thoughts when I saw the fender:

wow.. thats pretty ambitious, looks pretty good. . .oh no. . . not the caddy lights. . . please no

I love the chop, and love(loved?) the widened fenders, I think the new fenders may be a little too far

I like the fenders too, but not the caddy lights. Something older and one-piece is needed. Haunt Ebay for some cool old 30s lights. Caddy lights just don't cut it with the big bulging fat fenders (which I think are cool).

  21. With the chop and that visor, you're definitely gonna need one of those
    stop light viewers.:D

So you'll know, that original purple color is "CRUISER MAROON". It is one of the truest maroon colors used on automobiles.

Looks better, but I can see the "flats" where the individual pieces of the fender are fitted to the wire armature, particularly in the dead on rear shot that's taken vertically. It looks like the back end of the early 50's, pointy tailed Airstreams. How are you going to get those out?

I don't mean to be overly picky, after it's your car not mine :)D) but peaked, extended fenders don't seem to fit the baby round look of the rest of the car, it looks sorta gimmicky. You had a very smooth, subtle, organic look going, and the sharply peaked and dragged out fender line is distracting to my eye.

Of course, you ain't build'n it for me :D!

I can make fenders for your roadster too!:p. I don't mind opinions, i just have a vision for what the car will look like when its done, and I think it will be pretty cool, who knows.

That's cool, and like I said, you're not building it for me! Glad you didn't take offense, I wasn't meaning to be overcritical. LOL, I drew pictures of the roadster with pointy ended, skirted streamliner style fenders, looked pretty cool, but I didn't think I could make 'em. Looks like YOU could!:D

  26. Personally I love the shape of the fender. I would probably run a different taillight if it was mine. It still looks good though!

    Keep it up!

Maynot be what I woud build but a very impressive amount of work and skill going into your project. Build YOUR vision!!

I have a project of my own that has a lot of work but I'm only hoping to develop enough skill to complete it.

First showing anywhere on the web.

  29. Certainly looking like a Plymouth P15 sedan delivery to me.

Far as I know, they never actually made one, but I think the idea
is cool. Any more pics or info??
