Spare Tires. What do you carry?

So here is my dilema. My car has 2 different size tires, 560's up front and 670's out back, and 2 different wheels. I am just finishing a disc brake conversion and had to get new stock appearing wheels for the front, so I cant use the same wheels front & back. So here is my question, what should I do about carrying a spare while out on the road? Would you, carry 2, one of each size/wheel, or gamble and carry only 1, or none at all and count on a good ole can of slime? Thanks for help and sorry for the stupid question...

  3. What patterns are your wheels? They make multi-pattern wheels you could use as a spare. If they are the same pattern, use a disc brake wheel, it will still fit on the rear. Tire size is less of an issue.

I actually carry tire plugs and a 12volt compressor. No jack or tools. If I can't fix it with that then I will just get a tow. If you have an American Express you get a certain number of free tows and fuel help with certain cards. With my business card I get 4 tows a year.

Same pattern, same wheel, just different offset. front are for disc, backs are for drums. So a disc wheel will fit on a drum huh?

  6. I don't see why not.. Drum wheels don't alway fit on disc brakes though.
    Especially Ford.

The only spare tire I carry is around my middle. Seriously though, I figure I'm not going anywhere that doesn't have a gas station at least every 15 minutes since my cars use so much gas, that they could fix any flat I have. I guess it makes a huge difference in your car too. I'm talking Model A's here, so I don't have any room for a spare or jack so it's really moot for me. Maybe if you have a huge 50's barge, you can carry spares and jack.

Front - it's the end that steers the car - usually...:D

  9. Where are you driving, 1968? I haven't seen gas stations that fix flats with that much regularity since Nixon resigned.

I plan on carrying a spare in all my cars. If it's a size differentiation I'll use the smaller of the two as a spare.

  11. Fix-a-Flat works great...unless you have a blow out. Then call AAA...

If you carry one make sure it's the front one ! Odd size on the rear will work but odd size on the front and you will have a beast in your hands !

AAA card & a cell phone.
I'm in a roadster- no room for much of anything.

  15. I dont think I can carry spare either, I have 205/60/15 on front and 235/75/15 on back, the problem is the rear end has a posi, and a small tire on one side would kill it I think. Also my spare tire well in the wag wont even fit a 215. Im thinking a couple cans of slime, and a small comp.

I carry a 225/70/15 to match my rears, so not to mess up my Eaton posi.
It will fill in for my 205/75/15 front long enough to find a tire store to repair/replace it.

get a spare rim for the discs and have the holes slotted...

  20. with all the different space-saver spares out there there should be something you can carry in most any car except the smallest T-buckets and roadsters.

If you don't have room for that, how about some tools to break the bead and carry a couple of tire tubes to fit? I don't know that you could get them for super wide tires but most anything else should be possible.

Spacesaver spares are available for Ford in dual patterns 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 5.0 and for Chevrolets in dual patterns 5 on 4.75 and 5 on 5.0. We carry the Ford dual pattern in the trunk of the 32 3W mounted on the back wall behind the seat and next to the battery box.

I carry a space saver spare, drilled for multi pattern. They are small and will work anywhere. Take one of the space saver rims and cut the center out, and weld a 1/2" plate in its place and drill a multi pattern. And whamo great spare. But small enough to carry around. --TV

I kept the space saver out of my dads Olds 88 just for that purpose but usually I carried a Chrome reverse spare to clear the bed sides on the rear.
If I go out my driveway and turn left it's two miles to a tire store, if I turn right it's fifty miles to anything that sells anything except beer, po p and potato chips. We have too many stretches with no service of any kind up here not to carry a spare or some sort of flat fixing setup.

For my 37 sedan, I had a 4x15 steel rim made so it would fit in the trunk where the OEM spare resided. I chose a tire size a tad larger than the front tires (but would still fit without rubbing on the fenders) and then of course fit on the rear if needed. Got a VW bug sized Metzler from Coker for the spare tire.. looked nice and I'm glad I never had to use it! Gary
