Ok. I know many will see this as stupid, but it's been an issue here at home. I have the wagon(53 Pontiac)apart somewhat, and am in the stages of prepping it to go for some bodywork. I also have a 73yr. old local guy who's a wood-graining master lined up to re-do all the graining. I called fatman, and got a set of dropped spindles in route, plus a set of dropped coils coming too. Here's the dilema. My wife loves this car and now considers it hers. She wants it to mimic a "surf wagon". Surfboard on roof and all. I wanted a subtle tow-pig, or push car look. Or maybe a parts delivery car or an old speed shop type of thing. Since we live in the armpit of Ohio, I thought a surfwagon would be dumb. She doesn't care! I know this is sorta a dumb post, but just thought I'd throw it out there to the m***es. Well, what do you think? Here's a pic of the monster right now. Thanks
Yeah- ahh, I would just go with the original plan- I think the only real suitable "surf Wagon" is a Ford woodie. I guess it matters how long you wanna hear about this project in the future... -Crew
Speed Shop Parts Wagon is the only way..... Agree with above, you wanna surf wagon, get a woodie. BTW.. Great looking wagon Dave
**** that! If she want a surf wagon let her have it! Look at old pics, EVERYTHING was game for surfers, as many were not car guys! (Not all, but many) that Wagon would make a killer surf hauler.
Grump my man... I've hung 10 at Buckeye Lake in the armpit of the Buckeye State!!! Build the surf buggy. It would be cool!!! Surf Lake Erie or Die
Geez..you guys are alot of help Hmmm... Too many options! I told her it would look cool with "Grumpy's Used Cars" on the doors
What about "Grumpy's *** Wax" on the door?!? Ha ha... that wuz a surf thing in the 80's right!?! I'm thinkin' if the wagon is smacked on the pavement with cool wheels, a surf board will be a perfect compliment!!! Hell it's all about havin' fun anyway...Right? BTW, I seem to recall a "surf wagon" in the rodder's journal that wuz a '34 panel truck. Seems to me actual surfers could car less what kind of "tow pig" they used to haul their boards as long as they got to the beach!!! I'll bet several '50 Plymouth more-doors were used. It wuz more about the waves than the transportation. Ask any surfer today.... even a mini van serves the purpose!!!
I kinda think its lame to pretend to be doing something you're never gonna be doing... I'm just funny that way tho...
This wasn't meant to start a debate, just a light-hearted attempt for ideas. I would rather have the tow-pig/parts chaser, but my lovely wife is fightin' hard! Problem is them damn magazines! She snoops through them during the day and see's lots of different stuff done "her" way. I have no defense Damn Goodguys Gazette, damn them
Just like most times... BLAME JimA!!! Damn ex-GoodGuy! Either way, tow pig or surf Wagon it's gonna be a cool car. It brings to mind the '58 Chevy at KKOA. If nothing else the faux wood work will RULE if it's done right. And it sounds like you have a guy who can pull it off....
You have to live with your wife every day.If you have a good one who shares and supports your hobby give in a little. Life is short enjoy it while you can. Good Luck Bobby..
[ QUOTE ] I kinda think its lame to pretend to be doing something you're never gonna be doing... I'm just funny that way tho... [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, kinda like drag racing a U-HAUL TRUCK. HA HA HAHA....sorry Burndup, I just had to fill in for Germ there. If it were mine, I would make a shop wagon outta it....but thats cause I don't surf. Actually, I'd be more likely to make a moon shine hauler out of it..... However, on the other hand, there would be NOTHING at all wrong with making a surf wagon out of it. If the lady wants it, I would let her have it. Those are words to live by. Good luck on your decision. Sorry I'm not more help. VT.
Yep, he's only duplicating what was already on it, only better. Hell, the headliner is a cloth type material that looks wood-grained, and is mint. Yeah, I'll get'er done for your innagural reliability run!
Id say go with your wife, i know i would with mine Then she can't say anything when you get your 32 3W or what ever your dream project is. I mean surfboard's can be taken of and cars can be repainted.
Divorce?! ahh, no! would cost too much Besides, she's a keeper. ***Ok, give me some good creative ideas for rod/speed shop, or used car lot or something similar. It has to have Grumpy in it though! or it just wouldn't be right! ***
Keep the lady happy, play it right and you have a get out of jail free card to drag home another car. Just don't go with some pink **** and those ***********s like the surf jeeps of the 60s. You might want to talk her out of the faux surf board too, if possible.
This idea of mine is so cool no ones doing it. That is the litmus test of cool. Why not do all of it? Make a surf themed shop wagon. Think about all the polynesian tiki signography from years past. Talk to Dan Barnett! You can make a real cl***y tiki inspired vintage door sign. Think "Honolulu Speed Shop." If she wants to put a fancy surfboard(that can always be removed) in it with wood grain or mahogany veneer( which is super purty) You can always make a push bar to go out front(do you have a dragster or belly tank that needs push starting?, you might think about "honey now that we have a speed shop surf wagon push car, we need a dragster/belly tank to push start) out of mahogany too. Depending on your proposed era for the cars final look your sign can go from simple(50's) to spacey(60's). Or was your heart set on flat black with red rims and spray painted whitewalls?
I think Har**** has nailed it pretty good. I was gonna say to make it the "Grumpy's No Surf Wagon"! Letter that, or use your wife's name ("Mrs.Grumpy's No Surf Wagon"?) on the tailgate. Maybe throw a longboard skateboard or two in there. Do you water ski? Throw some water skiis in! Poke a little fun at the dilema!
you might just have to clone this to use your pusher to the fullest: Roland Leongs "Hawaiian" AA/FD driven for a while by some snakey little kid named Don Prudhomme with an engine built by some guy named Black. I think his first name was Keith.
Convince her that the whole reason (Truthfully too) for having a stationwagon for a surf wagon was/is it's long enough inside to stow the boards INSIDE where they wont be five fingered or blow off on the Newport Beach Freeway. I was behind a 60's Fairlane on the way to Donut Derelicts a few years ago when the bungie cords holding the three boards on the roof let go... I drove around the pieces of fibergl*** and foam... No one puts them on the roof of a vehicle big enough that they don't have to! Wood grain it, get some long boards and put them inside in the back.
I'm with Har**** on this one. Why can't it be both. Even if its a shop vehicle, won't it be advertising a fictional shop anyway?(Mine is!) So what if theres not an ocean any where near you. Who says it came from that area? (P.S. What ever you do keep mama happy! You know what they say "If mama ain't happy, no one's happy".)
you dont surf, you dont own a speed shop, your not gonna push a dragster... how about a gangster *** drive by wagon?
hell i'll even put bullet holes in it free of charge, but the only catch is you gotta get me on one of my pissed at the world Trigger happy days
