Anybody go to a KOA event. KKOA is pulling out of Gettysburg PA. this year and KOA is taking over the site. I live about 2 1/2 hrs away and another 50 miles one way for a one day show doesn't turn me on right now. I've never been to a KOA event, are they worth while.
As for the KOA , I will find out this year . I live 1/2 from Gettysburg so it's close for me but with the KKOA moving to Md. , now that's 1.5 hours now ! Really sucks ! I will go to as many cars shows as I can because I love hot rods !
My preditction is that both shows are going to suck. The KKOA show has been getting smaller every year, but it still attracts the nicest group of kustoms at any one show I've ever seen. With the KOA moving on on the same date, I'd bet each show will be tiny. As for me, I'm supporting the KKOA this year and in years to come.
I hope this deal doesn't hurt KKOA. Jerry Titus. and his fine group, were instrumental in bringing custom cars back from the all but forgotten. NSRA sure didn't help any with their '48 cutoff date, and their street machine division was mostly about muscle cars. Then KKOA was started in the '80's, giving all the guys with Chebbys, Shoeboxes, Mercs, and all the others with interest in customs, mild to wild, a home. I would say, support KKOA and attend their shows, if you can. They have certainly looked after us all these years.
The KOA will let anyone with anything in the gate as long as they pay ! That really sucks ! Why pay for a Wal*Mart parking lot gathering ?
I'm going to give the KKOA a chance at it's new fairgrounds/racetrack. They deserve a chance to bring back this great show. Yeah, it has been going downhill the last 3-4 years, but last year, in spite of predictions for bad weather, and extremely high gas prices, the numbers were UP. They've been at the forefront of bringing back customs for almost 30 years. the KOA are new guys in the scene (despite their "old" name, and "history") I have never been to a KOA show, so I can't comment on them. On the good side, the grounds are supposed to be as nice as Biglersville, and the hotels are nice, and WAY cheaper than Gettysburg!
I support KKOA big time.Jerry brings in the big name custom builders. It is cool talking to them face to face. A lot of really cool east coast KUSTOMS come to Salina Kansas every year.We here in Colorado like to see them.We don't have a event here, but hay half the fun of owning a Kustom is driving that sucker! I went to a KOA show in Moab Utah years ago, good show too bad it was a once and only time there.
Woah... back off. KOA kicks ass. The ones I've stayed at have foosball and serve beer! Thats as kick ass as a campground gets.
I'll be going to Sled Scene East in Barnsboro, Md. It's at the Mason Dixon Dragway and might be pretty Kool. Only 52 miles south of Gettysburg. KKOA and Jerry Titus are great supporters of real Kustoms, not minis and imports.
Why would they both have an event the same weekend? I'm sure there is some background to this story that I don't know but I just don't get why the KOA decided to have a show the same weekend. Why compete for cars? I think the rat rod and mini truck line would make up my mind: http://www.kustomsofamerica.com/koashows2009/leadsceneeast.html I LOVED the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular last year. It was one of my top 3 shows of the year. I'm stoked to see a resurgence in the KKOA.
Hey LLD, Was this show the Red Rock Nationals back in about '99? If it was, I was there and it was a GREAT show! What were you driving then? They never had a second show because of a fallout between the town of Moab and the local club that helped put it all together and the old President of the KOA. I don't want to get into it all, but it got messy. Moab's Rod Bender's have a show there, which is coming up here very soon. I've been to that one and it is good, but it is an open show, not just kustoms. It really is too bad the Red Rock Nationals didn't survive. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to and we had a ball! E
