I bought my restored 41 from a truck driver, the guy came and went like crazy. One night he calls up and says he's home for a couple hours and wants to know if we can finish up the deal on the truck. I had managed to get insurance on the truck but not able to get plates, so I just took the plates off my 69 and headed out for the hour and a half drive to get there. I screw the plates on my new ride and figure the back county roads would get me home unseen from johnny law. My wife (now ex) is folowing along at the 45 mph top speed that the old babbit bearing would do. Pitch black outside, no body is around life is good, look in the rear view and she has her damn flashers on ! It's like a damn homing beaken flashing in the pitch black for the local fuzz to find and ruin the ride. Sure as shit hywy patrol passes me in the oncoming lane and I see him pull the u-turn and hit the lights on my old lady. I go over the next hill and wait for her to catch up but to my surprise it's the damn cops instead. He gets out and informs me how she had told him I'm driving the truck the hour back home and she had the flashers on because I was going so slow. He says he pulled her over because he thought she was drunk but got the story instead. He runs the plate, sees the truck isn't registerd or inspected and I'm running a switched plate. He cut me some slack and wrote a single ticket for non registerd as long as I agree to parking the truck and having it towed home by 11 a.m. the next morning. That's how I got it home......
I bought my 51 in January. Me and dad go to pick it up. It was extremely cold that day. I had on coveralls and was still freezing We have a 79 F-350 and an 18ft car trailer. The truck has been sitting for many years with no rearend. The owner uses his tractor to lift the rear of the truck. We put the rearend under it using some old U bolts and a stick. We get the rar rigged under it. He pulls it down to our trailer with his tractor. We winch it up on the trailer with no problems. We get it to the house with no problems. We go to push it off the trailer and the rearend is getting cockeyed. We manage to tighten the rearend and get it off.
Anybody got any pictures or stories on how thay got ther rides home? towed mine home from michigan to ca. on a borrowed trailer with my wifes blazer . had to out run a tornado in kansas !! wheww that was to close ! ............. steve
1974. Barry helped me tow a 56 chevy 1/2 ton to my house. We got pulled over in every town we went through, about 20 miles all together. from Costa Mesa to Garden Grove so.cal. We were'nt doing anything "wrong" they just couldnt believe we were doing it with Barry's 1965 Honda 305 dream.
Cut an essex body in half with a torch and loaded it in the back of a 65 f-250 got the frame and rear next trip
the 55's story inst too exciting, just a 69 chevy shortbed and a car trailer which was broken in half in the middle and chicken shit welded back together (found out after, we just thought the bend was factory!) but it all got home safely. the truck sagged, but it made it. found the pics..
O/T my buddies dad sold a 81 f-150 to some gardeners one time, but it had a bad fuel pump. so the guys that came for it took off the hood, and one of them sat in the engine comparetment with a spray bottle full of gas and continuosly sprayed gas into the carb for three blocks, till they got it home. it was a hiarious sight to see...

After Tman and I had struck a deal to swap my 2dr project and some cash for his T a day was picked that would work for both of us and he headed south from Rapid City and I headed north from Oklahoma. We met in McCook Nebraska and swapped cars in a strip mall parking lot, ate pizza and came home. Long day, great feeling.
Hauled these 2 '39's home a distance of 550 kilometers or about 350 miles. 2/3 of the trip was icy highways. White knuckle for sure.
You know I started this thread with no idea were it might go.But god almighty there is some interesting stories!!!!!!!Me and BigO had beers tonight, and talked about the H.A.M.B., I just want to say thanks!! I'm glad were are not alone! We are all brothers in hot rodding.
Me and two of my buddies picked up my 32 from a body shop and loaded it in pieces onto a borrowed 18 foot flatbed and strapped her down and drove her 50 miles home with no problems.Got it back to town and i wish you could see the looks on peoples faces when they seen it was a young guy drivin the truck.I was asked several times if i wanted to sell it cause people thought i was hauling it in for scrap and once i told them that i was taking it home to build a traditional rod most of the peoples jaws hit the ground and couldn't believe it even had a couple guys follow me home they thought i was lyin about building it for myself and thought i just didnt want anyone else to have it cause they still thought it was goin to the bone yard!
When I picked up my roadster a few years ago I drove up from Oceanside,CA to Southern Idaho. Stayed the night and then dropped off my van to my brother, the next morning I grabbed my dad, coffee, doughnuts, and his truck and headed out for Sherwood,Ark. Picked up my new roadster, went to lunch with the new friends we had made, got about an hour or so of sleep. Woke up dad, grabbed more coffee and doughnuts and headed back to Idaho. Got to Idaho dropped off my dad. Stayed the night, grabbed my buddy, coffee, and doughnuts and headed out for southern, ca. We finally got the car home, stayed the night then grabbed some coffee and doughtnuts (see the pattern) and we headed back to southern, id. Got back to Idaho dropped off the truck to my dad and my buddy to his pissed off wife, stayed the night, mom made me breakfast and my brother bought me a plane ticket home. I could only get 5 days off to get this done so long story short I made alot of good memories with my dad and my buddy, spent alot of time on the road (which I love) and ate alot of doughnuts. I've tried to sell the car a few times but everytime I try I remember what I went through to get her I just can't seem to let her go.
drove this over 1700 miles and went through about 3 fairly major snow storms managed to collect a little chloride a little cold 18 degrees out today and no heat in cab or defrost, was tough to keep winshield clean
My tub was sitting in the bottom of a barn in Enfield, NH. We carried it out by hand and loaded it in the truck. You get a lot of funny looks driving down the road with an old car in the bed.
Found my 63 chevrolet truck on craigslist. Guy had listed in a local area, but truck was up in Winder around Atlanta. Thats about 5 hours from us towing a trailer. My buddy and I leave out at 5 in the morning and get up there fine. PO tells me the truck runs great but has no brakes. Get their and truck will not run. POS Holley carb leaks like a seive. So much so that after a nasty carb backfire (that caught my hair on fire) the leaking fuel on the intake also went up. Got it beat out with my shirt and we dumped a few bottles of water as well. After laughing at my luck with fire we pushed it up on the trailer and brought it home. Went to roll it off of the trailer, rolled a little too fast and park wouldn't stop it hello retaining wall. No damage though.
Hello I was (am!) looking for an A body to build a rod when I came across this one. It was too nice for me, so I talked my dad into it! I towed it home for him with my 93 Dodge and a friends trailer. It was a beautiful day in a Canadian winter!
Found this one setting in the back of an old junk yard on my way back from a swapmeet. I didn't have enough room in the back of pickup bed so I had to dive back an hour and a half to pick it up but it was worth it.
Hello Mickey C here, I recently bought a nice Model A coupe while on a job project in California. After considering shipping options or trailer rental, I bit the bullit and bought a trailer. At first I did not want to spend the extra coin for the trailer brake controller, but then realised I did not want want my last thought going down some mountain pass to be " Damn I wish I had those brakes now!" Anyway after working 15 hour nights to finish up I headed out from Pismo Beach at 10:am Sat. March 21. only one day after finishing the job. This was an error, because I did not realise how tired I realy was. After many more rest stops than usual I made it to my drive way on Tuesday morning of the 24th. After towing 2100 miles by myself with no problems, I had 15 feet left to finish my journey. While my wife watched from the porch as I backed my new prize in the driveway I proceeded to destroy the mailbox the fender and also the headlight assembly on my pickup! She raised her eyebrow in that way she has when I do something exceedingly stupid and said " welcome home honey." I just shrugged my shoulders and said "hi". Anyway what a way to arive home after 4 months, my neighbors loved it. The trucks in the shop, $1000 in repairs. However the coupe is safely in the yard and all is well.
