March 4, 1932 April 4, 2001 Thought I'd create a thread memorializing the man and his great works. Hopefully this thread isn't too OT and dont step on any tender toes.
RIP, Ed My Mazooma HAMB nickname is a Roth expression, my avatar is a "Big Daddy" airbrushed sweatshirt he did for me on my 11th birthday in 1961 equipped with my name and spiders...one cool guy
My son and I got to meet him at the Autorama here in Dallas the year before he passed. A super cool guy,and about as gracious a person as you would want to meet. I grew up in the '60's, and was telling him how his style had influenced my life and you could almost feel that he understood how he had influenced a whole generation. Mike
I thought about it. Maybe sandwich it carefully between two pieces of plexi so you can see both sides..maybe someday
Man, I can't believe its been 8 years already. Just seems like it was yesterday. I unfortunately never got the chance to meet the man.
Agreed that "Big Daddy" could be confusing between Roth and Garlits. Title is fixed. Cob Classifieds Moderator
thanks I tried to fix it myself ,but the edit button won't allow you to edit the title. Back on topic more pics guys.
I really dug everything about the man!!! I was fortunate enought to meet him on my B-Day....... Dat "PRESENT" will NEVER be topped!!!!!! AMAZING MAN!!!!!!!!!!!
In February, I was going home from the Nick Alexander woodie collection show in Huntington Park. It was a little rainy and I was in no hurry so I thought I'd drive by Ed's old shop on Slauson in Maywood where he airbrushed my shirt 48 years ago...the place just wasn't the same without the smell of paint and fiberglass resin...kind of sad in a sweet sort of way to spend a few minutes. That moment also reminded me of how much I miss my Dad who's idea it was to take me Ed's shop for my birthday so many years ago...Its stunning to think that JFK was the President. nobody had ever heard of the Beatles, a handshake was a "contract" and I could chose between 5 different drag strips within 1 hour of home to go to each weekend and still go to the jalopy races in Gardena on Sunday...
Thanks for the flashback. My memories are talking to Ed and different shows about just about everything under the sun - from the differencs in casting with sand for aluminum vs. Vermiculite for fiberglass to world politics and religion. He was a pretty deep guy who I miss running into. R.I.P. Big Daddy PS Thanks for the knives too.
Its a little late for a RIP. But I can tell you that right now he and the Ol' Man are sipping cognac, looking down and laughing at us. Mr. Roth was smmooth from the git, won't be forgotten.
