The hot rod I bought came with a Ford 9" rear end and while getting it all cleaned up I removed the third member and axles. I'm a GM man so I found this to be odd. One axle has a complete sealed bearing and the other has a bearing on the axle and the race stayed in the housing. Is this normal for a Ford 9" or do I got some kinda Heinz 57?
one side could have a ball bearing and the other is a tapered roller. chances are that the ball bearing side got replaced once and the tapered roller is stock. Ball bearings are easier, tapered roller are better.
I have no idea what it came out of but mainly I want to know if it will work as is with no problem. I don't really care if they are different but just noticed the difference when I pulled it apart.
My "78 F150 9 inch rear came with tapered roller bearings. Which went bad in a fairly short time. The replacement bearings were conventional sealed bearing. Looks like only one side on yours got replaced.
yes lincoln versailles caliper mount in the picture , had one of those rearends under a mustang of mine !
Yes, the race on one side is still in the housing but it looks like the bearings are different like the other have said. One side is a sealed bearing and the other is a bearing and a race that stays in the housing. Now, how does this bolt to the housing? Is it like the drum style rear end housing that uses the T-bolts? Where can you get those T bolts, my local parts store doesn't carry them.
One side is a roller bearing with a race in the axle tube....the other side is a complete sealed bearing that stays on the axle.
Both are tapered rollers. They have the seal between the halves. That is the black band on the complete bearing. The sealed bearing has a separate axle seal in the housing. tapered roller (set 20) Sealed bearing
I did that to a Tbird about 15 years ago. When the tapered bearing failed, it chewed the race in the housing. The machine shop that pushed the old bearing off the axle put a one piece sealed bearing on saying "that's how they are now". If you took that rearend apart today, it'd be the same situation.
Thanks for all of the input. I did take the race out and looked at it good. It's just like Relic Stew posted in the top photo. Anyway, I'm going to get them both replaced before I put this back together. Maybe they will both look the same then.
They do use T Bolts just like a drum brake version. You can get them from Currie a**** others. You can also use regular grade 8 bolts but it can be difficult to hold the heads while tightening them up because of clearance.
