I just wanted to see if anybody but me had problems finding parts for the old 57-64 olds pont rear ends. Im looking for brake parts. I need brake drums, wheel cylinders, and a hardware kits. I can find brake shoes easy at any local parts store but thats it. I would appreciate any help I can get. THANKS
You can try Gevo's Rears and Gears. He deals with these style of rears a lot. He usually only deals with the diffs, but it's worth a shot to ask if he has the parts laying around. The website is www.rearsgears.com, you can get his number there. He rebuilt a 57 chevy P rear for me and did a fantastic job.
I don't know about drums, but there is a long thread on the hamb about these rearends....also a guy sells new stuff on ebay for them...Summit Racing also has rear disc set ups.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129676
Try Frank's Pontiac Parts http://frankspontiacparts.com. I've dealt with them and they are good people.
Napa has wheel cylinders, hardware and such...brake drums I'd get from a junkyard or Owens Auto Salvage here on the HAMB...
I put a 61 Pontiac rear axel in my 59 GMC. Couldn't find any brake parts for the Pontiac, so I adapted 57 Chevy brakes to it. Moser makes axel ends intended for 12 bolt Chevy axels. These ends use big 9 inch Ford wheel bearings, (to elininate the C-clips in a 12 bolt) and bolts the axel shafts in at the bearing, (like a stock Pontiac/Olds). Chevy in there infinite wisdom used the same bolt pattern for the backing plates from the 30's? up to at least the late 70's/early 80's. So, you can use these axel ends and put stock Chevy backing plates, drums, shoes, etc. on a Pontiac/Olds rear end. Basically any year Chevy rear drum brake setup should work, from early 1950's to the 80's. I used 57 brakes, cause that's what I had sitting around. You'll need to have custom axel shafts made up though. This worked really good for my GMC, cause the 57 brakes are the same as stock GMC/ Chevy pickup brakes. So, I didn't need to change any of the rest of the brake system. By the way a stock Pontiac/Olds rear axel uses the same wheel bearings as a big 9 inch Ford rear axel, so the axel shafts do not need to be any smaller in diameter than stock.
