A friend of mine calls today and says he knows of an 50`s model Ford in a barn/garage that has been sitting for a long time and the guy just wants it gone. So we meet up after work and go and look at the car. Here is what I think...er what I could read of the vin tag on the firewall. What is crazy is this car is right here in Round Rock/Cedar Park area! 98BA599515 There is no drive train or suspension. It looks like "most" everything is there. The only gl*** I am not sure of is the front. The rear gl*** looks really good. The drivers door gl*** is broken out. The floor boards are rusty as well as the rocker panel under the p*** door. I spoke with the guy that owns the garage/barn and he said that he married into the family that owns the property...they just want the car gone. It looks like some started the body work. Most all the panels are straight and it looks like 30 year old primer on it. The Texas plates say 1975.... Its mine and we will get it out by the weekend. I have been told its a 50-51? I dunno. If I didnt have another huge project already I would probaly build this. I just did not want to see it go to the crusher!
well....we gave him 2 --18 packs of beer..and didnt even pick up the car Any idea exactly what this car is? year/make/model/engine by the vin?
'49 has gas tank filler like yours, below the "windsplit" while the '50 had a gas tank door above the windsplit. You can also see the outline where the parking lights were on the front fenders, which indicate '49; '50 wrapped around. Go to www.carnut.com and look at the car pics index; you can see the difference between '49, '50 and '51
Externally, trunk latch, hood ornament, door handles, dash trim and slight differences between 49 & 50 dash trim and steering wheel. Small differences in the grille between 49 &50, big diff in 51 Once you get one you'll pick up on a lot of differences. It's a 49 two door sedan. Coupes have shorter quarter windows and a longer sail panel between trunk lid front and where the roof flows into the body. Looking from here, good parts car as well as a good start for a bracket drag racer. Good find. 49 coupe - pic circa 1958. The car above has 51 Ford headlight trim rings.
WOW ! What a great find . Hell I would give anyone a couple cases of beer any day for that . I love the 49-50 Fords ! One of the best Fords ever made . If you don't want it I will give you 5 cases of beer for the car ! Can't hurt to ask ! That's 3 cases more than you gave for it ! That's a good deal , Right ? I hope you build it , great car !
The first digit of your serial number, 9, indicates 1949 model year. '49 and '50 are basically the same car, easiest ways to tell them apart--'49 has pull-out door handles like an old refrigerator, '50 has push ****on. '49 has parking lights in the ends of the grille bar, '50 has round parking lights mounted on a chrome piece under the ends of the grille bar. Both '49 and '50 have the single bullet in the middle of the grille, '51 grille has two bullets. .49 and '50 has the same taillights, '51 has a chrome piece that fits over the quarter panel that allows for a larger and wider taillight. I always thought '49-'50 Ford had one of the neatest, cleanest dash designs ever.
I'd like to have a better look at that wood steering wheel that I can see laying inside. Where did that come from?
that wood wheel looks plastic. It might be a Mustang one. The car has all sorts of Mustang parts in it too. I see vent windows, seat, front and rear valence, maybe door windows, brake pedal, and the steering wheel.
My first car at 16, was a '50 4-door Custom. My aunt and uncle gave it to me, because the paint was gone and the dealer would only allow $250 for trad-in. I worked after school at the local body shop to trade out a paint job, '57 Olds Belmont Met. Blue. I couldn't afford new tires, so I paid 4 bucks for rubber falsey white walls, and 15 bucks for a set of checkerboard spinner hubcaps. I also burned up my mother's sewing machin making "naughy" door panels for it. Later I added 3-2's and full length Lake Pipes. They owned it for 11 yrs. and drove it 41K miles. I had it 18 mo. and it had 97Kmi. There were just two cars on the high school campus then, my '50 and the rich kid's '61 shiny red Impala Convertible. My buddies bought the gas and I provided the wheels. Finally, sold it for $175.
sweet deal man if you hold on to it for a while and find you will never get to it..im sure there are plenty of HAMBers that would bring it to life..and proud too
its funny you say that. The guy that was working on the `49 also has a 60`s Mustang that looks like a beer can crumpled up. The steering wheel was on the floor and I layed it in the car to keep from kicking it around. There is no telling what other treasures are beneath all that stuff. We are going over Sunday to go thru the car and see what is there. Also get it up on dollies to move it.
Well we got it out today. I worked out a deal with my friend Carlos and he is now the new owner! He already found a flat head to go in it. A buddy of his has a `50 model that he is going to rob the suspension and rest of the drivetrain from. When we got it to his house we pulled out the dash from under eveything. The cluster, radio and entire dash looks really nice as are the granish molding. It even still had a set of keys in the ignition switch. Looks like most everything is there. Most rust is contained to the trunk and rockers. We also noticed that the body is not bolted to the frame. The frame looked like it had been cleaned and painted. Look for it to be on the road in the Austin area. Anyways....here are the pics of the loading and of the new owner!
We found the all the lights, screws to hold trim etc. togther. The rear gl*** is near perfect. The front gl*** is there but needs replacement. The door gl*** and sides are damaged. Thanks for all the info guys!
Great find. When you get into it you may want to hook up over @ http://www.shoeboxford.com/ in addition to here. They specialize in 49 - 51 Fords. I have the same handle over there.
