In my visit to Kansas City swamp meet, I noticed that a 700r4 transmission has a removable bell housing, and so does a 4L60. Is this true? And do any of either of these have integral bell housings. I am interested in the ones that DO have removable bells.
not my 700r4..the case is solid all the way back to where the tail housing mounts sure you aint looking at a standard trans not an auto?
strange...got a picture of it?..I havent ever seen a 700r4 like you describe, but than i havent seen it all did the rest of the trans. look like that picture i posted?

4L60E...hope this helps. never heard of the 700R4 coming stock that way... not sure of production date(s)...I think it started to show up in the late 90's...?
yep, that is probably what I saw, 4l60 or 4l65. That wouldn't be a bad swap into an older car with older engine. Probably be alot easier to swap than cutting up a th400 and you get a bonus, overdrive.
The 700r and 4L60 are the same damm ******. Now when you jump up to the 4L80, then you are dealing with a whole different ****** bellhousing is bigger and may not fit all trans tunnels. Then you ad the "E" factor, now you need the harness and the computer. Fuuhhhhgedaboudit.
They will when you price the computor and harness stuff that it takes to run one properly. Ive already looked at it. Tony
The only 700 type transmission that comes with a removable bellhousing is a later model 4L60E. Unfortunately they are computer controlled so would need a computer to run it.
Tony: Those computers control just about everything in the car. A simple Pic chip and all is well if you know what u r doing. I have a 4l60 in my Sliverado (that is what I call it, purposely mispelled) and have the manuals. Simply put, the Pic chip is about $7 and the sensors needed (tps, speed sensor, temp sensor, and a map sensor) would be all that is needed. Possibly something else, but no biggie. Figure about $150 to do the electronics/sensors all together. BTW: I am in the electronics field, been an engineer for 30+ yrs. Cl***ic cars are one of many hobbies. Remember this is meant for carburetion, not FI. I will investigate this and PM u with the findings.
Do you have a 4L60 in the Sliverado or a 4L60E. As has been stated before a 700R4 is a 4L60. Two names, same transmission. On a 4L60 all that is computer controlled is the converter lockup. On the 4L60E every shift is controlled by the computer. A stand-alone economical controller would be really cool if you could make that happen. Good luck.
The 4L60E overdrive is what the removeable bell pic is of and it does take a stand alone computor to control all shifts and lock-up The controllers are on the market and pricey this trans is also bulky compared to the earlier stuff Tony
Every stand alone set-up for the 4l60e has been in the neigborhood of 1500 for the complete ready to run kits, Wow d2_willys, if you can pull that off for 150, there certainly is a market for these systems. Good luck, keep us posted.
maybe he forgot a "0"?... I was told the same thing when i was contemplating rining a 60E..that the set up could run up over a grand... I'll be very happy with my 700r4
I believe it is a 4l60E since it is in a 98 Sliverado. Still no biggie, probably get one of the aftermarket proms (if they make them for that truck, which is a good bet they do) and reverse engineer it. This electronics they make most of us believe is rocket science is not to engineers that work with that **** everyday. Believe me I will let every hamber know when I get the 4l60e working in a mid 50's Buick with torque tube drive. R U guys starting to see the overall picture as to what I had inquired about the trans for?
As was previously stated the 4L60 and a 700R4 are the same. In 1993 The 4L60-E was introducedand then in about 98 they went to the bolt on bell housing. And there is a company that makes a stand alone computer just for the transmission. However, if you are gonna go the computer controlled route and have the room I would recommend the 4L80-E. This is very similar to the 400 and is a pretty damn tough transmission. Just my 2 cents.
Is their computer less than $100? And do you have that company's name or website. Thanks for the 4L80E advice. I think the nailheads of the world will be happy again with something other than a damn dynaflow to have their backs.
