Are shoebox ford steering wheels splined or keyed? I need to reclock mine and don't want to do it by adjusting the tie rod.
I'm pretty sure they're splined, but there was one larger spline on mine if I remember correctly, the wheel would only go on one way.
The "best in town" sometimes overlook the simple things... I made sure I specifically told the guys at my alignment shop that I wanted the wheel straight when they were done.
I had the "best in town" do an off topic jeep and he turned the tie rod adjustment the wrong direction to level off the steering wheel. The jeep wouldn't turn to the right more than a few degrees. It almost caused an accident entering traffic. Shop tech. said that there was something wrong with the brand new tie rods and ball joints I installed, until I crawled under it and fixed it myself in their parking lot.
Deffinately splined. I have one I am using in my '34. The one big "key" was 180deg off from my f-1 shaft. I checked it about 50 times and then filed out one spline....but I digress.
y-block 292 is right. just be sure to turn the tie-rod adjusters an equal amount on each side--no big deal!
better think this one out. if you adjust the tie rod ends you will change the toe.Steering wheel will remain the same. Think you should be adjusting the link between the pitman arm and center link or steering arm on the spindle(drag link). Am not sure which you have.
They are all splined . There is no easy way of doing it the correct way but to adjust the tie rods sleeves . That's the only way to fix your problem . Just remember to do it the right way ans REMEMBER to count your turns . Also Please DON'T use vice grips , channel lock or pliers to adjust them with . There is a tool to do it the right way with . You can buy them fairly cheap at HF . Why don't you just spend the money and have a Pro do it so you know the front end is aligned properly . If it's out that bad the front end should be re aligned .
